Anyone have any opinions on what I've been using--Remington Core Lock. Is the Winchester Super X any better or about the same?--Bboy623
I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6!

I have found that shooters can lead you down many roads, what works well in one gun may be crap in another.  The best thing to do, would be buy a box of the bullets you are interested in and shoot 'em.  Determine which ones your rifle likes the best then, go buy as many of the same lot as you can.
I tried Winchester, Remington, Federal, and Black Hills Gold, Heck I even bought some Nosler custom bullets... Tried 'em all.  My gun shot best with the Black Hills.  My brother's shoots the Winchesters best, but goin through my gun, the target looked like a shot gun blast had hit it.
Again, Good Luck!

My .270 is a Ruger M77 MkII.  I shoot Winchester 130gr power points.  Groups well and kills cleanly.  I thought I needed to shoot a more expensive name brand bullet so I tried  federal's with the 130 Nosler BT, but they did not penetrate and required more than one shot to bring deer down.  The Winchester PP worked so well that I reload with them.  If I get my elk tags I will load up something heavier.

Wow SD,
Both my kids shot their deer, this past year, with 130g Nosler BTs.  The shots came from the .270 at about 130yds.  Both deer went down like rocks and in their tracks.  Had no problems with penetration.
Which is exactly what Iam saying,  what works for your rifle might not be good for another.  Two Guns

They grouped wonderfully, but nice targets don't kill deer.  Glad they worked for you, but for me they failed miserably.  The deer I shot with them penetration was the issue, maybe 8" was the max, lot of surface damage.  Bad lot?  I don't know.  With the Win PP, I got pass through with a 130 gr.  Most of the deer I have shot have been broad side, a few quartering to or way and I aim for the heart & or lungs, but no Texas heart shot.  Glad they work for you.

It has been 4 years and if history holds true, will most likely be another 4 before success.  For an SD elk tag you need to have roughly 8 years worth of preference points before you are drawn.  It can come sooner for later as SD works on a lottery system.  Was looking at 140 gr bonded if lightning ever strikes.

Hi Bboy;
The 270 Winchester is a grate cartridge imo, but it only be comes a true big game round with bullets like Nosler PT, Swift AF and Barns X, amid some other I have not used.
I've shot the 270 for the last [40] years and Killed lots & lots of stuff with it.
Penetration is what you want to look for in factory ammo.

Bboy, you don't live in Cali do you?? If so you may want to consider going lead free like the Barnes TSX. I predict the laws will eventually change here again and entire state will be forced to go this route.

I currently use Remington Premier A-Frame for both my 30.06 and 7mm.  As of this year Remington doesn't make 'em in 7mm but they do for a .270. WTF!!!

I just started using a 270 last year, loaded up some 130 Hornady Interlocks
killed two deer with them, both about 140 yards, one doe in the heart, just fell over in the scope. a buck in the chest quartering towards me, ran about 40 yards

both died instantly but the bullets came apart and didn't penetrate
so, being as that they were both on the ground fast, I can't say the bullets failed
I want something a little tougher for hogs but still want expansion

I am working up loads for the 110g TTSX this week
they worked GREAT in my 6.8
text book perfect, caliber sized entrance, fist sized cavity and quarter sized exit wound
3 deer and several hogs

I put the big hurt on many deer with a .270 and some 130 gr. Winchester powerpoints. I can't imagine any  deer size critter taking a well placed shot and not being dead VERY soon. At reasonable ranges that you have business shooting a .270 at, I never saw a need to have anything more............until I bought a .300wby, and started handloading. I still don't NEED more, but its cheap to step up now.

I have used Remington Core Lock 150 grain for years in my pre-64 Winchester and had excellent grouping at the range and success with killing our  California black tail deer.  I recently changed to Winchester XP3 and also have had good results and groupings at the range.

Winchester Elite? Federal Premium? I've been realitively happy with the Remingtons...just didn't know if there was something better---Bboy623

Guys, could you post factory ammos that you recommend?? Like Winchester Supremes or Winchester Elite XP3 or Federal Premium Vital Shock etc....so I'll have an idea of what to look at. I do not have any reloading equipment so making my own is not an option at this point. I need ammo that is fairly readily available--Bboy623 Whacko

Depends on what you mean by "better"!  Also depends on what you mean by "realitively happy".  Better could mean more accurate or it could mean more deadly.  You don't need a rifle/ammo combo that shoots tiny groups to kill Deer!  And anything that kills quickly, without the deer running off is appropriate!

I was in the same position as you about 5 yrs ago.... had been shooting Core-Lokts for years with no problems, but "thought" I should try something better.  I'm back to shooting Core-Lokts!

I have decided to get into the reloading game, but not because I was dissatisfied with the performance, but I get tired of having to re-sight-in my rifle after buying new ammo!

Got my son a Rem. 700 CDL and he used the "blue" box 130 grn Federal ammo last year to take 2 deer with no problems.  Picked up some Fed. Premium at a great price over the winter, hoping they shoot as well as they are "cup-n-core" type bullets just like the blue box is.... which is what Core-Lokts & Power-points are as well!  Unless you are shooting out to 400 yards or beyond, save some money and stick with the Core-Lokts!
take em!
