I have a pair of Pentax 8x42 DCF WPs that have done yeoman service, but after years of abuse they are not what they used to be.  I am looking for a replacment, and am leaning towards 10x. These will be used primarily for hunting, so clarity and brightness are paramount.  They need to be waterproof.  I would hate to spend more than $400 because because I am so rough on binocs, but I could probably be talked into spending a bit more if necessary.  What is the best option?

Thanks.

Assuming you’re talking about something in the 42mm range +/- again, you’re really not gonna do any better than the brand you already have.  The Pentax 10x42 DCF WP II is a lot of binocular for $350.  You could also look at Bushnell Elites or Nikon Monarch ATBs for the same general quality and value.

Regarding 8x versus 10x, I used to be a big 8x fan – believing in the exit pupil rule, I thought they were brighter in low light.  But now I’m drifting more toward using ten-power a lot – during normal legal hunting hours I find the 10x is arguably just as bright.  Depends on where you do most of your hunting – if you aren’t glassing much over 1000 yards, then I’d stick with the eight-power, which will give you a wider field of view and allow you to penetrate cover better.  I have decided that for long range glassing – mostly Western hunting, but not always – the ten-powers are the way to go.

Hope that helps – just my opinions based on personal hunting experience.

Bushnell Elites are not in this class.  SWFA list them for $900.00.

I own the Pentax DCF-SPs, which can be had in 8 or 10X for near $400.00.
