I have the following requirements for a new spotter for hunting western big game
WWYB- What would you buy??

It must be 65mm class

It must be no more than $1600- Preferably 900-1200

It must be relatively lightweight (it will spend many days on my back in the high country)

It must have an angled eyepiece

It must have an adjustable eyepiece

Thank you for any thoughts. I'm feeling overwhelmed by all the research i have done on this forum and have already learned alot.

Kowa TSN 660 with zoom eyepiece is within the lower end of your stated budget and an excellent spotter for the money.  A buddy and I just took turns shooting and spotting with his for the last three days and I was really impressed with his Kowa for the price.  We were on private ranch land in S E WA shooting across canyons at small rocks from 300 to 800 yards and it worked great.

A used swarovski non HD ats/atm   sts/stm 65mm with 20X60 eyepiece.

A Nikon fieldscope 3 ED 60mm  20X60

Vortex Razor HD 65mm

Zeiss Dialyt 18X45X65  have seen demos for around $1000, best pack scope.

Sorry, forget the zeiss.

For $1600 you could pick up a lightly used Swarovski stm/atm HD. These are lighter than the new aluminum ats/sts only scopes.

Some solid suggestions. The kowa is one i really hope to get a look at and compare directly to an older swaro. Has anyone on here had the chance to make comparisons directly between:

kowa 660 vs swaro 65mm

zeiss dialyte vs swaro 65mm

nikon fieldscope ed VS zeiss, kowa or swaro????

I own an older Swarovski non HD 65 mm spotter with variable eyepiece I bought slightly used 10-12 years ago at a distressed price from an estate.  Since I didn't take it on the trip I was not able to compare it side by side with my friends Kowa.  I've used the Swaro enough to confirm its optical quality is superior to the TSN.  However, based on my uses for a spotter I'd buy a TSN if I had to replace the Swaro rather than pay current prices for a Swaro.  Obviously this is my subjective opinion.  Considering the price differentials it might be worth a trip to one of the larger retailers where you can do some side by side comparisons.  I also recommend side by side comparisons with 25-30x LER eyepieces to the variables.
