From what little I know of African plains game, it will probably be the gemsbok that will test your bullet more so than kudu. They are tough, and can be somewhat dangerous when wounded. I've heard it said that it's adrenal glands can dump four times as much adrenalin into it's bloodstream as does that of an elk of similar size!

I wouldn't use any bullet under 180 gr. Like already mentioned, the Trophy Bonded, A-Frame and Nosler Partition are all good. Take the ones that shoot best. |

They want the ammo with the gun so when its stolen the new owner has some ammo to use with it right off. Al;so that way when they loose your ammo........they loose the gun also. All the times you see people post on the internets about ammo being lost and you needing to have to buy something where you are going, I have never heard of this happening in all the people I know who have flown various places in the world to hunt. Heck my buddy shoots a 366DGW....imagine getting any of those ANYPLACE.....yet in all his trips they always get there too.....

I agree. However, I still think a Sierra gameking would work fine on those beasts.

With all that has been said, may I suggest http://www.superiorammo.com/ammo.html since ammo cost relative to an African hunt is negligible. They carry all the bullets mentioned and are excellent.
They are also in South Dakota in the same town as Dakota Firearms and Cor-Bon, FWIW.

It all depends on the particular airline. The FAA gives them some individual leeway on how they wish to handle ammo storage, so you should check with the airline you plan to use. I know American Airlines requires just the opposite -- they want the ammo packed separate from the rifle in your check-in luggage. They also had specific requirements on the box as Pyro mentioned. Or, at least that was their rule the last time I took an AA flight with rifle and ammunition.

Sorry guys, I have been in Berlin Germany for a couple of days and came back with some serious flu.
The 300WinMag loaded with 180 gr will do the trick for you. I think that your guide will probably put you in a good shooting position, which means you can go for the correct shot placement.
African game seem to have a will to live above all else. Proper shot placement, more then the quality of bullet, will bring them down. It is the marginal shots that stress all the variables. A 300 WinMag has a good knockdown and a lot of South African hunters use them. The standard core bonded do for most locals. Hornady, Sierra Gameking being the most popular. There is a following of the BarnesX etc, but I would stay away from that.
It is true that the Gemsbuck will more then likely take a full one in the chest and still keep going.
I personally have graduated from 180gr on my 300H&H to 200gr all in Sierra Gameking. I have for the first time loaded Nosler Part, but have not hunted with them yet.
I think the 300 winmag ballistics is better suited to the 180gr and I would stick to that. That is plenty to bring down a kudu or a gemsbuck. Normal corebonded should do the trick. Anything more premium such as the A-Frame or Partitions, is a added bonus if the shot goes slightly off course hitting big bone.

Not knocking you here Pyro, but headshots can be very tricky. Shooting the jaw or horn off, instead of a clean kill. Such an animal is hardly ever found they seem to rum for miles.
The gemsbuck also has a deceptively deep spine curvature. So what you think may be a good neck shot, goes right over the top of the spine. The best shot still remains low on the chest, either on the legs, or just behind the legs. This way you take heart and lungs, and break bone. There is also reasonable room for error. Nothing fancy, but it hangs the trophy on the wall.
