I am going on my first African safari this May and have recently purchased a Kimber 300 win mag to take with me. I was curious in getting feedback from people (especially those that have been there) what they felt was the best round to use for Africa plains game (my main objectives are Kudu and Gemsbok)  I do not reload, and am looking for the best factory made ammo.

something loaded with the swift aframe like the remington premier 180gr swift aframe or the 200gr aframe or the winchester xp3 elite 180gr or norma's 180gr or 200 gr oryx   federal has the 180gr and 200gr trophy bonded bear claw and also the 180gr tsx
a square builds the 180gr dead tough rn sp and aldo the 180gr monolithic solid rn so you have some choices for sure

Well since this is one of those chances that may be once in a lifetime, price is not a real concern. That being said, I of course do not want to spend extra money for a 'perceived' advantage or for just a name. I was looking at the Hornady Interbond but I only see that with a 165GR bullet. (I have heard a lot of good things about the Interbond)  I have not seen much or heard much about the Hornady 300 WIN MAG 180 GR SP HEAVY MAG, but that is another one that I am looking into. Also the Federal prem I have heard are good rounds.

Federal Premium 180 grain Nosler Partition would work fine. Anything that you would shoot at an elk would be perfect.            --Ed

Although I've never hunted in Africa, I do know a kudu is a pretty large animal.  A full grown bull weighs a little more than a Rocky Mountain Elk.  So, I would say anything you would use to go after elk should be adequate for Kudu.  I would pick whatever tough, controlled expansion 180 - 200 gr. bullet shoots well in your rifle.  I wouldn't use the interbond personally.  Although it is a bonded core bullet, it's still a fairly thin jacketed, moderately fast expanding bullet, and when you are on a hunt of a lifetime, don't take chances.  Get something that is designed to stay together well and continue penetrating.  The more a bullet expands, the larger it's frontal surface area will be, and therefore, the greater chance that part of the bullet will break off.  More frontal area means more drag, and less retained mass after expansion means less momentum.  Both mean less penetration.  Moderate, controlled expansion will still do plenty of damage and penetrate further in thick, tough animals.  The rest of the bullets mentioned above are all good choices.

They actually have both, the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw  and a new bullet the 'Trophy Bonded Tip'.

that trophy bonded tip looks a lot like a barnes mrx or tipped tsx i imagine it performs the same on game too, so it would work as well imo

I would also suggest 180-200gr bullet in a bonded core configuration.  I'd lean more to a 200gr bullet if Eland is on the menu.  I personally think that any of the bonded core bullets would be exceptable, you choose your favorite.

The bonded cores in heavier weights will probably be exceptable.....however for a once in a lifetime plains game hunt I will take the same track as Ted and go with a proven performer over there. The swift A-Frame is an unbeatable bullet for predictable performance and my hunting and gunsmith buddy up here goes to africa every other year and swears by them. He has taken quite a variety of animals with never a mishap or problem.

Along with the bonded core bullets you could add the Partition, A-frame, Tsx, Grandslam and numerous others to the list of heavily constructed bullets.

Little ol' redneck me thinks you are going about this backwards.  I'd talk with the guy you are booking the hunt with and see what they have locally.  Then I would try and get some of that stuff and see how my gun likes it.  That way when the airlines loose your ammo you have a good idea of how stuff works.

i was watching a hunt on TV today and the guy mentioned the airlines wouldn't let him take his ammo so he was off to the local store to get some!  First I've heard of that, but not surprised!

you have to have it in factory boxes is what i was reading, on an airline's web page, it can be in one of those plastic mtm boxes for some reason, and i think the prefer you place the factory box of ammo inside your aluminum gun case.
this is apparently an faa standard on all airlines uniteds read the same way as this one did

From what little I know of African plains game, it will probably be the gemsbok that will test your bullet more so than kudu. They are tough, and can be somewhat dangerous when wounded. I've heard it said that it's adrenal glands can dump four times as much adrenalin into it's bloodstream as does that of an elk of similar size!

I wouldn't use any bullet under 180 gr. Like already mentioned, the Trophy Bonded, A-Frame and Nosler Partition are all good. Take the ones that shoot best.

They want the ammo with the gun so when its stolen the new owner has some ammo to use with it right off. Al;so that way when they loose your ammo........they loose the gun also. All the times you see people post on the internets about ammo being lost and you needing to have to buy something where you are going, I have never heard of this happening in all the people I know who have flown various places in the world to hunt. Heck my buddy shoots a 366DGW....imagine getting any of those ANYPLACE.....yet in all his trips they always get there too.....

I agree.  However, I still think a Sierra gameking would work fine on those beasts.
