friend of mine is looking for a decent set of binocs
he would like to spend around 2-300 (tops)
I pointed him to the samplelist

he checked out my Swarovskis and was blown away, compared to his 20 year old $75 pair of Bushnells he said it was like 13" black and white vs 50" LCD :)

his old binocs were lost recently and he has an upcoming hunt
there's no way to get more money together for high end binocs

looking for something not too heavy and with the best glass

why 7x42?  If 8x42, you will get more options from samplelist.

Not to provoke Ed's wrath, but from the samplelist.com your options are reduced to porro prism Steiners and higher magnification Monarch ATB's from Nikon and a couple of compacts.

My brother uses some steiners, my monarch's are ok, but . . .

CANON makes them so great.
They MEET your Topic requirements.
They were highly recommended by someone with years of firsthand binocular experience, on another binocular forum. 8>)

Canon 7x42 were not phase coated for a long time, they have a narrow field of view, and they looked dim to me.

A good $300 7x42 would be the Bushnell Discoverer.
Also, the Vortex Diamondback 8x42 at about $200 would be a good binocular with wide field.
Your friend is still not going to get the Swarovski view, but but have a good glass.

QUOTE]

Todays 7x42 has both phase coating, and, aspherical eyepice elements for brighter views, but, the FOV is ONLY 7* degrees.

what about all the Steiner Hunter 8x30s or Ralley 7x50s on the samplelist?

the Steiner Hunter 8x30 is actuallly a decent hunting glass, but i looked at a Rally 7x50 some years ago and it had so much stray light and flare in it that i think it would a bad binocular at sunrise and sunset when the light is low - that is when you want to see game, not flares inside an optic.
