What about 2-7 or 2-8, those ok?   You are more likely to find those power ranges in more scopes, and probably more useful unless you do a lot of shooting 30 yards and closer.

The 1.5-6 you can do Bushnell Trophy, Pentax Gameseeker, and Nikko Stirling for around $140, Konus M30 for $250, or for over $300 the Meopta 2000, Burris XTR, Burris Euro Diamond, and Burris Sig Select....maybe a few others.

The 2-7/2-8 scopes you can do Vortex Viper, Nikon Monarch, Burris Fullfield 2, Weaver Classic V, Mueller Multi Shot, Swift Premier, Simmons ProHunter and more for $300 or less.  They are probably better quality than the -6x scopes that are $300 and less.

Leupold has some 1.5-5's, 1.75-6's, and 2-7's that are a little over $400 also.

Are you setting up a big-bore brush gun or a lightweight varmint rifle?

Right now for that range of variable scope I would go after http://swfa.com/Vortex-2-7x32-Viper-Rifle-Scope-P11227.aspx  for a big-bore brush gun

For lightweight varmint rifle....if camo'd out http://swfa.com/Burris-2-7x35-Fullfield-II-Rifle-Scope-P10995.aspx

From all indications and reviews those 3 are not cheap scopes, just great prices.  Lifetime warranty, clear and bright optics, light and compact,  and two of them have ballistic reticles.

There aren't all that many 1.75-6x scopes out there.  The only one I can think of is Leupold VX-3, which is a pretty nice scope.

With 2-7x or 2-8x, there are more options, and there I think Vortex 2-7x32 offers a lot for the money.

If you would prefer a larger objective lenses, there are some 1.5-6x42 scopes out there, although they are not as common as they used to be.  Burris Signature Select 1.5-6x40 is probably worth a look.

The Burris Sig Sel is a nice scope, but about $200 out of your price range.  They also make the Sig Safari in the 1.75-5, but again out of your price range a bit.

It my opinion, it would be worth saving some extra money, and stepping up.

Some very good scopes have been recommended by guys that know scopes. I am no expert but I know what I like in a hunting scope. I like the power spread of 1.75 -6 for big game because it works for any  situation. Some scopes I own and like are the Leupold vxll 2-7x32, Burris 1.75-5x32 Signature and the Weaver Grand Slam 1.5-5x32. I got the Burris new at auction for $315.It weighs 12.5 ounces. The weaver weighs 11.5 ounces and was $290 new on sale. The Leupold weighs only 10.5 ounces and I got it new at auction for $240. I love all of these so far. I have used Leupolds for all my hunting and shooting and never had a problem. The 11 ounce Leupold  vx3 1.75-6x32 may be the best scope in this power range but it is hard to get one for less than $400.

I am pretty sure that the new Nikon Monarch 2x8x32 sells for under $300.
