Looking for a reasonable set of high power bino's to keep in the car for the occassional deer seen in the fields.

Currently have a set of pentax 12X PCF WP that I don't like, would prefer better.

Basically, I'm looking for a great set real cheap :)

Would prefer under $300...

My best experience in the 12's has been a pair of Minolta Activa W's in 12x50.  Fairly lightweight for a porro but armored and water proof enough so they can take a light rainfall.  Great wide field of view, sharp image, and minimal chromatic aberration.

The image is tremendously sharper than a non-phase coated roof and sharper with better color than my Bushnell Legend roofs--so much so that I sold the Bushnell roofs after I got these Minolta's off of e-Bay.

The great thing about the Minolta Activa's is that you can pick them up for a song usually and yet you are still getting a binocular made by a brand name optical gear supplier.  The 12x50's cost me $58 plus shipping on e-Bay since they weren't the latest and greatest version.  I liked them so much that I later bought a pair of 7x35's--which provide a vastly sharper image across the field than my Nikon Action Extreme's that I paid three times as much for.

Talk about 'throw in the car' glasses!...

The Pentax PCF WP's, the Nikon Action Extreme's, and even the Bushnell Legend porros (which I have always loved) all weigh a great deal more than the Activas--as a result, I seem to keep the 12x50's in the bottom of my back pack in the back of the SUV so I've always got them handy.  I keep the 7x35's on a peg by the back door for the same reasons--light weight but durable, water proof (but not to the extent that the Pentax is) enough to get a little wet, and sharp crisp picture even in low light.  Fully multi-coated, Bak4, wide angle, fog proof porros from a leading manufacturer at a cheap price.

Where's the downside for a pair of "keep in the car" binocs?

I have a pair of the 12X50 Windriver's that I love.  They are a great glass for around $375.
