OK, I am ready for any bets.  We are going back to Hyde County NC this weekend and the next (extended weekends) for the last season of black bear hunting.  Now thus far I have been skunked for two years, seeing only the smallest ethically shootable bear in the whole county last month.  80 lbs. probably and no I did not give it a thought to take it.  So, I am setting up this poll to see what everybody thinks just for the fun of it.  Comments, serious and of course funny are welcome, as well as any poking fun at me.  I invited pyro6999, but he is tied up.  Maybe next year.

i would love to come on a bear with you, cause the bear hunt in mn is the wrong time of year for me im busy busting my ass working 60-70hrs a week so i dont have time for bear hunting, your season would be perfect the way it sounds maybe one of these quick years i can afford it i would love to see some of the carolina area never been in that neck of the woods.

If the bear doesn't pan out the squirrel sounds good - tasty eating!
p.s. aim for the head thay can get downright nasty when wounded

I hope you see a good one, stay awake in the stand and make a good shot. I'm so jaded with where I live that I never give bear hunting much of a thought. I view them as nusiences as they like to mess with our deer cams and tear up anything that smells like food left in the woods. Left my knapsack hanging one year with some peanutbutter crackers inside....big bummer...tore my new backpack to heck and drug it quite a ways up thru the woods. I've also lost one camtracker to an angry sow that got an eyefull of flash at a couple feet.......

I have faith in ya, D, so I actually voted that you'd shoot a decent bear.

... only because the poll wouldn't allow me to make multiple selections!Wink

dolphin, if the bear don't work out, I hear that there's a pretty good blackfin run right now.  I'll let you shoot one on the gaff with that 300 if you want!

Thanks Ted.  You know, when I set it up, I did so to let it make multiple selections, but did it on the edit function.  Maybe that is why it does not work.  Oh well.  I have two weekends to get one.  We only get one tag, so I am going to make the best of it.  I may take either my 17 hmr or mach 2 to the stand, so when light is almost gone and I am sure that a bear is not going to show, I can shoot some squirrels and not waste 2.5 bucks a bullet shooting at squirrels.  lol.

Are you hunting over bait? Up here the really big old smart ones usually come in just as the last minutes of shooting light are waning.

I believe we have one of the highest success rates of any state, I used to take an interest in them but not anymore. Got some big ones too, over 400# get killed every year. Funny I walk the woods all the time stand placing, game camming, and scouting, never think about bears and never carry a gun. But you'll be walking along and see a saucer size track or a rotted log or stump just tore to pieces and it kinda tightens you up for a while. Only excitement I've ever had in all these years was walking into a big bull moose during the rut, that was as exciting as I ever want to experience.....long as I live! My Dad did get between a sow and her two cubs once in an old overgrown orchard and got to experience a couple teeth popping false charges. Only time I worry about bears is going after one someone didn't shoot good. They will often go in a straight line thru anything you can imagine....swamp, bog, alder thicket, spruce or fir cutover, but when you press em' and their hurt bad....they will often circle their tracks and lay there waiting....

a buddy of mine was hunting bear with a bow two years ago and he was in a tree looking over a bait and a sow and two cubs came into the bait which the sow wouldnt be legal to shoot and neither are the cubs, if she was alone another story, but anyway a boar came into the bait as well and the sow chased the cubs up a tree and ran the boar out of there but the problem was the cubs came up  the same tree he was in, but they went all the way up where he was only about 12 ft off the ground when the sow came back and looked up the tree and saw her cubs up there and him up there too she got pissed and came up the tree teeth and all, took chunks out of the soles on his boots he hit the bear with his bow a couple of times and she kept coming up in the mean time trying to get the cubs out of the tree which he managed to do but the sow wasnt happy with the cubs being down she wanted to kill him finally it was dark and a full moon and all he could see was the reflection off the eyes and teeth and he drew the bow back and shot between the eyes and the bear fell to the ground and ran away, his arrow was on the ground at the bas of the tree and he never found any blood trail or a dead bear the next day.

Well this time shoot one. Where are you hunting? Are you over bait or just sitting stands?
