Thinking about buying a scope with a BDC reticle and mounting on a 7mm rem mag, wsm or saum. The idea being to use the reticle out to 500 metres or less, in the field.

The 3 options within my price range would be

Monarch with nikon BDC
vxIII with boone and crockett
conquest with rapid Z

I already have a 3.5-10x44  conquest and a monarch 3-9X40 both with plex reticles and I like both of these scopes, but I'd be equally happy with a VXIII.

I'd  be looking at a 3-9X40 or 3.5-10X44 sized scope, with a 1 inch tube.

I like the look of the boone and crocket reticle best, it looks like it would be good for low light. The nikon has no windage bars, but I've heard that these are not reliable anyway.

Has anyone tried these reticles and if so can they share their thoughts/experiences?

I'm not a big fan of any range finding reticle, though I believe i'm in the minority.  I've always used some sort of the plex retilce for the the last 20yrs. and am to bull-headed to try anything else.

Rapid-z kicks a$$. Great glass for the $$, bright enough to see all the marks by legal light, clear, and reticle works as advertised. What more could you need?

I've done a bit of reading about the nikon BDC and it seems that some people think that that the reticle/circles are two thick/big. I was leaning towards the nikon because of the price but am unsure because of the reticle issue.......................

yeah you might have read where I said they were to think, But a 5 shot group @100 yards a dime will cover isn't to bad.I would like the cross thinner but it isn't TOO thick to be able to shoot nice groups. I really do think this was a well thought out scope.

So sticking the circle over a deers chest at 500 or so yards isn't a worry? sorta hard to imagine how that works out without trying it

The SWFA gang were hitting cans of shaving cream out to 500 yards using the BDC reticle.

Monarch if money is a problem
Conquest if you want to smile every time you pull the trigger (unless YOU miss)
III if you have too but with the varmint, not the B&C
