Anyone with any experience with these? What might they be compared to?

Thanks, Lee

I'm assuming that you are buying used as Bushnell no longer markets any optics under the B&L badge and they also don't currently make an 8x50 Elite.

Answering your question then is going to be dependent upon the age of the binoculars in question and how well they have been treated.

The Elite was the first binocular ever to break the $1000 price tag and even so, they still sold like hotcakes. They were as good or better than anything against which they were competing. Assuming the particular unit you are examining has been treated well, it still would probably be almost as good as most of today's current crop of high-end glass.

Thanks for the reply, Found a set of displays, model 61-0850, water-proof, in as-new condition. kind of odd built being porro design. Should gather alot of light. Not alot of reviews on the 8x50's on the internet. Sure look good to me. Was just wondering what others might think of them? Thanks, Lee

I had forgotten that the Elite 8x50 is of porro prism design.  Actually this just makes them all the more desireable as they would never have needed any of the phase-correction coatings necessary for good image in roof prisms.  In good condition, these would likely exceed the image quality of any and every roof prism binocular on the market today.

Thanks lucznik, Went and bought the pair for $400 at Cabelas Bargain Cave, have gotten to play with them for a day now. I'm completely amazed with them. Very low light, clear details & good color.  Any idea what the advertised specifications for them are? Can't find a site with RLE or Twilight Factor or what glass/coatings was used. Also my Dad bought a pair of Cabelas Alaskan Guide 8x42's, seem to be very good glass, any idea as to whom they are built by? Thanks Again.

Relative Brightness Index is 39.1

Twilight Factor is 20.0

These are merely "rough" estimates, as there are too many variables between all the formulas to really do justice to the multitude of optics, optical coatings, prisms, etc.

The Fujinon 7x50 FMT-SX has a R.B.I. of 50.4 & TF of 18.7 in case you are wanting something to make a "rough" comparison with.

ENJOY your purchase!

Here is some infromation about the early (B&L) Elites.  I'm pretty sure the web page is old but, the information is still valid. Notice the price tag on your 8x50s.

Sorry, I don't know anything about the Alaskan Guides.  Though, I would bet your dad would have done better had he purchased one of those 8x50 Elites (assuming they have another one.)  What Cabela's were you visiting?

What i have examined for two minutes back in the mid 1990s was a very large, heavy, bright, sharp, excellent optics, and roof prism. I believe they were the ones to break the $1000 limit. One of those for $400 is a smokin' good deal.

Thanks Guys for the links & info. Cabelas in Fort Worth. They also had a display case full of house brand factory-refurbs for 50% off marked price. Alaskan guides were $233 for 8x42's. Now that I've gotten Bino's, it's time to start looking for a quality rifle scope. Sample List here I COME!!! Merry Christmas to me.....
