My friend just picked his new `09 Ruger compact in the 300 RCM. Already has his dies, shell-holder, brass and is ready for some reloading.

WE gonna have a `lil chrony contest for speed ONLY, for compact "bragging" rights.

The rules are........... We use the same bullets with the same weight, probably 180 gr. All other components are at our secret discretion. We load em up in 1/2 grain increments and once any pressure signs are seen, then the 1/2 grain reductions from there will stand as max loads and then will be chrony`d.

The contenders;

           300 RCM Ruger compact; 16.5" barrel........his
           300 WSM Ruger Frontier; 16.5" barrel........mine

He has NO clue of the site. He has no computer!!!...........Squeezer gonna use some RL 17!!!....Laugh.....Roll on Floor Laughing

Who ya bettin on boys????????

He will win with the 180 gr. bullets, but not 150 gr. Hornady already did this test with different barrel lengths. The .300 RCM with a 20" barrel was slower with the lighter 150 gr. bullet, but was faster with the 180 gr. Both were hornady SST.

Both the .300 RCM and the .300 WSM had the same barrel length.

I bet it is not rl 17.  I dumped powder out of my lever evolution ammo and it was 2 kinds of powder mixed.  I bet most of their recipes are like that.

Ya, it was surprising when I broke some open.  It had green cylinder powder and black round powder in it IIRC.

The only way they can make money is by doing what they tell us not to. It makes their ammo look better than anything but time-consuming, custom handloads.

......................I`ll do dat!!..........NO cheatin!!!!!!!!.........It`s gonna be awhile before the "shoot off" because we first will both go to the range seperately to shoot, chrony and tweak our top secret maximum loads......Naughty

Like I can do, I don`t think the 300 RCM from the shorty tube can slighty better 2900 fps using the 180 grainer.

...............I doubt very much that`ll happen!......Highly unlikely!.......Besides, I know within 50 fps either way what his best will be. Been doing some homework on the 300 RCM.

Before the "shoot off" comes around, I`ll be ready having done my experiments. I`ll make sure that the reloads that I`m going to use, exceed what I think his will do. RL17 seems to have the best capability for speed in the 300 WSM. At the very least, in order to tie or beat me, he`ll need 2950 fps from a 180. From a short barrel, I don`t think the 300 RCM can do that, with or without RL 17.

My friend will be doing is homework too, but I haven`t seen any RL17 data yet on the 300 RCM............And I hope there isn`t any either!.........Big GrinNaughty

So you have the added advantage of having data for RL-17.  You may have to redo the test after there is data for the RCM with RL-17

Ok Guys!..........Looky at what I found doing my homework on the 300 RCM.

Go to "rifleshooter.com"
click on "Ammunition"
scroll down to the bottom and click on "page 3"
Find article...."Short But Sweet"

Pay particular attention to page 2, the sixth paragraph down, just above the pic of Van Zwoll on the bench.

Notice the average chrony`d velocities from a "TWENTY" inch 300 RCM using 180 gr factory ammo. Right about at the mid 2800`s. Now deduct about 15-20 fps per inch for the shorter 16.5" barrel..... 3.5" X 15 to 20 fps= another 52.5 to 70 fps of loss.

Any percentage gains my buddy gets with RL17,,,IF HE USES IT,,,then SO will I......

I think my friend is in,,,,,,REAL,,,, DEEP,,,, DEEP,,,, DEEP,,,, DOO DOO!!!..........Laugh

.................But! I already have a faster barrel on my Frontier,,,,as my smith has told me. Remember, I`m only losing about 4.0% to 4.5% in total velocity vs the 24" 300 WSMs. There are many 24" barreled 300 WSM rifles, that have reached 3030-3050 fps using a 180 grainer (BEFORE RL 17). Deduct 4 to 4.2% and what do ya get??? That falls right on par with my top chrony`d velocity of 2917 with a 180 gr SST (max load)
from my 16.5" mighty mouse.

I still think my friend is in REAL DEEP ****!!!!!!!....Horse Poop.....Sorry ED!..Laugh

AND! I`ll really,,,LMAO,,,if he has a slow barrel on his new compact......Roll on Floor Laughing

...........Oh it`s still quite awhile off. We need to prepare our loads, we both will need to go to the range at least one maybe two times each to get prepared and do so according to our schedules. Then once we have our secret loads worked out, then we have to schedule a date to go together for our shoot-off. Besides all that, I`m still waiting for some RL 17 to come in.

He may be waiting for some himself and not telling me, as I am waiting for some and not telling him. Whatever velocity boost he gets if using the 17, I will too. The 300 WSM and RCM are very close in design so I have to assume that RL 17 will work porportionally as good for him as it will for me.

The WSM holds a few more grains and assuming we both use RL17, I think the added case capacity will be my ace card. But the chrony will have the final say so.
