what is the difference in getting a 20 moa base and low rings vs. getting a 0 moa base and high rings?  (besides cheek weld issues)  i see a lot of discussion on bases.  I am outfitting a savage fp10 308 and will be getting a ss 3x9.  Longest range we have is 600.  I do have some hunting pipelines that are longer....not skilled to do the 600 yet.

A 20MOA base is going to raise the ocular somewhat because it changes the scope's mounting angle. But its main purpose is to give you more usable elevation, regardless of ring height. The SS 3-9 has fairly generous elevation (about 20 mils or 68 MOA) so you could go with a flat base on a .308 and have enough to easily get out to 600 at any altitude. However, should you ever get a hair to go out to 1000 you will be just at the edge of the elevation needed even with a 20MOA base. I've always used 20s with my .308s and they've worked well.

What I found after a while was that regardless my stocks were just simply too low...nothing a flat base would have helped. So I added Carsten cheek pieces to get a much better cheek weld. It was much cheaper than replacing otherwise good stocks.
