Hi Guys,

I have an early winchester 70 that has an early Redfield Base. That rifle of course was not originally drilled and tapped for a mount. Is there a way I can cross reference the Redfield Base to its Current Leupold counterpart? Or measure the spacing?

Thanks!

 WELCOME to OT,Kenny.

So your saying you have a pre-war  M70 with a 1pc Redfield base on it?  If I'm not mistaken all pre-war M70's were drilled and tapped on the front of the receiver (2 holes) and a base that mounted to the two holes on the side of the rear receiver ring was available.  Anyways, how many screws are in the rear of that Redfield mount?   Right off I'm guessing it's a #70.

Thank you for your reply. It has two holes in front, one in the rear. Pretty cool setup with a Lyman Alaskan scope.

  REAL NICE set-up!

The Redfield part # for that base should be #511111.  BUT with one mounting hole in the back your limited to a 1pc base so why you wanting to change that one out?

I want to put a fresh base on so that when I use the new rings, it will be a tight fit. The front dovetail portion is kind of "wrung out" So, i want to start with a fresh base and rings.

I should say, that I want to start over with a Leupold Base and rings so everything is good to go.

I can't find where Leupold offers one for your rifle.  But Weaver lists their top of line Grand Slam base #48936 for M70's with serial numbers below #66,350 which yours should be. There is only one hole in the rear and the hole spacing of the 2 front ones are .435" so you can measure your old one and compare.

As far as rings go you can contact SWFA and tell them the scope you plan on using and they'll match you up with the proper rings.
