I am in the market for a 17. I want to shoot squirrels at 100yards and hold dead nutsSmile
Being such a hot little round I was just curious if the barrel will would wear out quick? DO they require frequent cleaning? Anyone have much experience with one? I would love to hear your 2 cents. I am excited about getting one as I already purchased a burris FF II to slap on it.

I have a Marlin 917V 17HMR with a Burris FFII Ballistiplex.  It is sighted dead at 100 yards and I shoot gophers and pds at 200+ yards with it.  I have about 1500 rounds through mine with no issues.  I have never had the barrel (bull barrel) heat up on me from constant shooting.  Doesn't get any dirtier than a 22 LR and mine seems cleaner than my 22.  Can't comment on barrel life, but I am guessing it will take a lot of shooting to do it.

If the point is to blow them up the 17 will do that but if the point is to eat them use a 22 and walk closer.
If you get a 17 look real strong at the CZ unless you need stainless then the marlin and savage are about the same. Not sure which FFII you got but at 100 yds Im thinking 16x or 20X Super Sniper off a solid rest but if you are closer a lot of the time that would be too much power and a 6x Super Sniper would be a good all around scope or depending on which FFII you may have it pegged already.  I would suggest you avoid the few lever action tube mag 17hmr rifles that are out there where a 22mag in a tube fed gun is quite nice.  Hope this helped.

Barrel life is very long with the .17 HMR, as is the case with all rimfire chamberings.  Though it's faster than other rimfire rounds, it's still pretty low pressure and fairly slow compared to a lot of centerfire cartridges.

.17 HMR does require a bit more frequent cleaning than other rimfires because it fires copper jacketed bullets that will leave fouling in the bore, but it doesn't require any more frequent cleaning than a typical centerfire.

It's fun to shoot, and it's typically very accurate.

first gun I bought was a 17hmr, a savage with accutrigger. I'd probably go with a CZ if I did it again, love my Brno .22 model #452.
I wouldn't know about barrel life but I haven't found they foul much, though I tend to clean it after most shoots.

I'd recommend the 17gr balistic tips for any purpose hunting, and not both with the other 20gr.
And like someone above commented, use a .22 if you're going to harvest the meat of smaller animals, the 17hmr does more damage.

The CCI FMJ bullets do not explode like the ballistic tips do on small game. They are just as accurate but sometimes it's harder to find the FMJ in the stores. I have an 1885 Winchester and a Cooper. Both will put 5 shots under .30 with a 3-9 scope at 100 Yards. I love the 17 HMR.
