I am looking for a spotting scope to use for CMP highpower competition and only have about $250 available right now.

I was considering a Burris Landmark in 20-60x80mm but noticed that the Simmons Wilderness 20-60x77mm uses the BaK4 prisms. Any advice for an optics challenged newbie who is trying to come up to speed? Will both of these allow me to see bullet holes out to 300 yards? Will the Simmons have a brighter view at higher magnification?

I wish  could look through them myself before buying

Although I do not personally care for Burris optics, I would tend to rank them significantly above anything by Simmons.

lucznik,

How about one of the Nikon Refurb's on the Samplelist? Better or equally mediocre in your book?

I don't know much about refurbished products so I'm hesitant to give a real pointed opinion.  My understanding is that you give up much (if not all) warranty coverage when buying refurbished and I have had enough service work done on my optics (from quality brands like Leupold Gold Rings,  B&L Elites, Pentax DCF WPs, etc.) to have given me a pretty strong bias for either buying new or at least buying products like the Gold Rings whose warranty coverage is for the life of the product, regardless of any other factors.  I'm not saying that buying a refurb is a bad idea, just that you had better be sure you understand and are willing to accept any warranty limitations the manufacturer will impose on such an optic before you lay down your hard earned cash. I will say unequivocally that I will always buy Nikon over either Burris or Simmons even if if costs me more to do so.

Nikon's Sky and Earth scopes are quite nice and their FieldScopes are excellent indeed.  Pretty much the only Nikon spotter I wouldn't buy is their 16-48x60 Spotter XL.  This is not due to the scope being inferior in any way but, because the essentially very same scope is made for Bushnell (their 15-45x60 Elite) by the same manufacturing plant and it sells for less $$$ than the Nikon.   Thus, if this were the type of scope I wanted, I would buy the Bushnell.
