I am having a custom 300 ultra mag built & can not decide if the PH 4X16 TDS is woth the extra money over the AV 4X12 TDS.  It will be a whitetail field gun mostly with shots ranging from 50 yards to hopefully 400 yds.  I will be shooting a ALOT of paper before attemping the 400 yard deer shots.  I am comfortable & proven at 300yds, but that is my current limit.  Is the PH worth the extra $700?  CHRIS?  OTHERS?  Thanks for the replies.

Personally, I would not pay the extra $700.  Unless of coarse the female cast of "Baywatch" hand delivered the PH to me.

i would save the 300 bucks, or maybe use a scope of equivelent. maybe the 4-16 black diamond, it has the ballistic mildot reticle, which has holdover out to 700 yards. with a 300 ultra mag, 300 yards isnt very far at all, and you'd probably jsut as well off with any regular scope. i have a leupold vari-x 3 4.5-14 on mine, and killed a deer at 400 with it.

Read this thread it may clear up some of the confusion between the two.

Does the TDS work at all power settings, with the 4X16PH & 4X12 AV?  Or is it like the Leupolds that only work on one power setting?

That is a good question.  I think that the answer is that it will only work on one power setting, which I believe is the highest.  This is just a guess.  How about a little help on this one.

It depends on if the reticle is in the first image plane or the second image plane.  If the reticle is in the first image plane then it will work at any magnification since the reticle increases as the target increases.  If the reticle is in the second image plane then it will only work on one set magnification that it was calibrated for from the factory.  All of the AV series are second image plane (or American style) reticles so they will only work on one setting and like ranburr said it is usually the highest setting however sometimes it is preset at 10x.  The owners manual will tell you.  It should come with a  TDS instruction booklet.  Most of the 30mm or PH scopes are first plane reticles however I believe that the PH 4-16x50 is actually a second image plane reticle meaning that it also will only work at one preset setting.  I checked the Swarovski website to be sure.  Both of these particular scopes are second plane and will only work on a preset magnification.  If you want a first plane reticle then you would need to get the PH 3-12x50 instead.  Take care.

One more point, the PH 4-16 has a parallax adjustment and is more of a long range scope where the AV does not parallax adjustment.  I don't know if that is important to you or not.

tbone1 is correct...both the 4-12 and 4-16 tds scopes are 2nd plane and have to be on the highest power, however as he also mentioned the 3-12x50 PH is a first plane scope and the TDS works on all powers.
