Well, if you want a new toy for long range shooting, I'd say either one
would fit your needs quite well. I'd have to give the nod to the BA 110,
but I don't know if I could tell you with a straight face that it was a
purely rational choice. Not saying there's anything wrong with either
one mind you, I just think this is something of a Ford/Chevy decision.
I will say two very practical things though, and keep in mind that this
is based on MY thoughts, experiences, viewpoints and prejudices.
First, I can think of no rational reason to buy one of these rifles in
.300 Win Mag, and that's coming from someone who selected the weapons in
his armory based on a communality of .308 caliber bullets. I'm not
criticizing the .300WM either... it's a fine round that has done a lot
of excellent work around the world in both military and civilian
applications. I just think that the rifles you are looking at are a step
up in Class from the Model 70 or 700 Class of rifles. I actually plan
to add a Win Mag to my armory in the future, but it will be based on one
of THOSE rifles, perhaps a Kimber.
No, if I were stepping up to one of those weapons you mentioned, I would
go all the way to the .338 Lapua. Oh, and a reloading press if you
don't have one already, because that gun doesn't shoot bullets, it
shoots $5 bills.
Essentially my logic is this...
A .300 WM gets you up into a RANGE class of a .270, 7mmRM or similar
round, or even a little beyond, with the hitting power of a full sized
.30 caliber bullet. Kind of like a souped up .30-06 in a way, although
obviously beyond the power levels a .30-06 can reach.
If you're spending the money one of those rifles you mentioned costs,
then step up. Because the NEXT step beyond is really .408 Cheytac, .416
Barret or .50BMG. Again... My OPINION. I don't want to try to portray
myself as some sort of guru.
The 2nd thing I would say is, if you're thinking in terms of a SHTF
situation, I would strongly suggest that you give some thoughts as to
what sort of role a weapon like that would play in your life.
Some people, and I'm not saying this is you, but some people would be
thinking along the lines of defending your home or town against
belligerents, possibly even the government. However, if you're talking
about outlaws, those weapons are overkill, no pun intended. If you're
talking about the GOVERNMENT... You can bet that if things go sideways
that at least a third of the military will be in the loyalist category,
which means they will still have snipers at their disposal. I promise
you, and I'm speaking as a veteran; the FIRST loyalist soldier taken out
with a high end weapon like that will get a counter-sniper team on your
butt faster that Rosie O'Donnell can plow through a tub of ice cream.
More importantly, if you are thinking in terms of defending your home or
town against outlaws, what you really want to have is a PDW, even if
it's non-traditional. For instance, I have some Marlin Camp Carbines in
.45acp to go along with my 1911's. I have ZERO trouble holding my rounds
to minute-of-bad guy at 50 yards with the pistol and 100 yards with the
carbine; all with interchangeable magazines.
Although, as a Sci-Fi nerd, I have to admit that I have been eying up the PS-90 at my local gun store.
I guess my thoughts come down to one basic concept.
Question yourself rigorously until you are as close as possible to being
absolutely certain of WHY you are buying one of those rifles and if it
seems to be a wise choice that will fit the needs you are trying to
address.
