If $1500 is firm: Nightforce.

If there is "wiggle room" up: Premier.

The gun generates some recoil, don't buy cheap or you will be buying again soon.

I usually have SWFA S.S. 10x42HD on my 338 Lapua:

If you want a variable, there are other options of course.

Is a 10x good for 1000 yards I thought I would need a 20 or 30x. I was thinking I would need a variable. I know very little about optics.

That depends on the size of the target.  If you can see the target with 10x it will work beautifully.  If you are trying to hit something fairly small, you may need more magnification simply because aiming could be challenging.

There are people here who know much more about long range shooting than I do, so I will let them chime in on that.  I do not know that a lot of people use simple 10x scopes at 1000 yards with good success.

Generally speaking, if you are new at this, it will take a while to become competent at 1000 yards and you will spend far more time at closer ranges learning and practicing.

If you really think you need more magnification, here are a couple of options for you in a variety of price ranges):

You make sure you have some funds reserved for high quality mounts.

Trijicon 5-20, cross hair with a dot, mil dot or triangle on post reticles all have good glass and would serve your purpose. SWFA sells them for around $1020 so it not only leaves some $$ for good mounts but also ammo for practice.

That Trijicon only has 50 MOA of elevation.  So that pretty much rules it out as any kind of true long range scope.

Love the scope - wont work for this application it only had 50 moa of internal adjustment with a long range caliber like a 338 Lapua the sound advice is go Nightforce or U.S. Optics or Premier.  There are some used ones on Samplelist in very good condition that are a bargain right now.  The bare minimum scopes would be  SS 10x HD or Leu Mk 4 as you just have to have a lot of internal adjustment built into the scope since this is the type of cartridge that will eventually be pushed out past 1000.

The USOs are gone, there is one Premier left and it is a smoke'in deal, especially given Premier's recent price increases.

My original advice stands, but with the premier price increase, Hensoldt is a good buy too - and about the same $$.  And how strange is that!

Adjustment is one of the reasons I included the Sightron S3 in there.  6-24x50 S3 has 100MOA of adjustment range.

They looked like nice scopes.

I am trying to get a 10x42 loaner for review.

The Premier and Nightforce are 3 x 15 is that the power I should be looking for or do I need to be in the 20 to 30 range and is there any other brands on samplelist that have the needed MOA adjustment.

since you are getting it for long range shooting , you will be using it on the highest or pretty close to the highest mag. most of the time sfp would help in the dollar area,  a 6.5x20 leo mk 4 would work just fine. , if you get the NF get the 5x22.
