Is a 10x good for 1000 yards I thought I would need a 20 or 30x. I was thinking I would need a variable. I know very little about optics.
That depends on the size of the target. If you can see the target with 10x it will work beautifully. If you are trying to hit something fairly small, you may need more magnification simply because aiming could be challenging.
There are people here who know much more about long range shooting than I do, so I will let them chime in on that. I do not know that a lot of people use simple 10x scopes at 1000 yards with good success.
Generally speaking, if you are new at this, it will take a while to become competent at 1000 yards and you will spend far more time at closer ranges learning and practicing.
If you really think you need more magnification, here are a couple of options for you in a variety of price ranges):
You make sure you have some funds reserved for high quality mounts.
