I took out my ar 15 to the range for the first time since mounting my vortex viper 2-7x last weekend. I had it mounted and boresighted on a burris AR PEPR scope mount. When I started to sight it in it was about a foot low at 50 yards. I adjusted my scope up and the adjustments maxed out about 5 inches below my target. I could turn the knob but it was obvious the adjustments no longer had an affect.
I called the manufacturer of the gun because I was told the barrell might be misligned with the upper receiver. The told me there would hardly be any chance of that and to check with the scope manufacturer to see what they might think. I will call Vortex this weekend but thought I would post here first while I am at work.
If I do not get any leads, I will have someone else re-check the mount and start from scratch.
When shooting iron sights my gun shot fine. This leads me to believe that the barrell being misaligned with the receiver is not likely.
Any ideas?

It could be the barrel or the scope or the mount or a little bit of both.
Iron sights do not really help with this, but if you have another scope/mount to try that would be the best test. ILya

I know this is a stupid question, but did you check to see if all the screws were tight? Also check to make sure the screws going into the receiver & picatinney are torqued to the correct poundage!

LOL I am not very knowledgeable about setting my own stuff up. I had it mounted at a gun shop.
I guess I will take it somewhere to get checked out.

i took my old rem 721 to a gun shop to buy a new scope... ended up needing new rings and mounts as well. they did it all for me and boresighted it... and after the first round down range, the damn rings were rattling on the mounts. listos: don't take for granted your gun shop either knows what their doing, or didn't miss something. |

sounds to me like they didnt use a torque wrench to tighten stuff up. |

You dont' need a gun shop, just a good torque wrench. Weaver sells one and it has multiple attachments.

i'm not sure what he did or didn't do.... i do know that a flat head screwdriver fixed it in a jiff.

im confused now, you said earlier that they mounted every thing up on your 721 and you went and shot it, and it rattled right away???? |

Most likely culprit I believe is the mount. The fact that the scope has a fairly limited amount of internal adjustment makes this more obvious. Least likely would be the alignment of the barrel most manufacturers of AR's are pretty good at putting them together.
Solutions are:
Select a scope with a lot of internal adjustment like Super Sniper 6x42
or
select a mount that is more likely to be correctly made like La Rue
or
shim the rings on the mount you currently have to adjust the angle of the scope within those rings, while this is the cheapest route it does sound like a half ass fix but this has been done for years. You can cut a small piece of an aluminum pop can and place it under the bottom of the scope within the the back ring. When tighetning the screws on the rings use a torque wrench.

when i got the 721, it had a redfield widefield on it, that was probably nearly as old as the rifle. after i bought my son's tikka, i decided i liked the new redfield scope i put on that for him enough to buy one for myself. so, knowing nothing about rings, bases, or mounting a scope and bore-sighting it... only that you need to, i took the rifle with me to the store to buy the scope.
the scope wouldn't fit on the rings i had, the older scope was a bit longer (if i remember), so they had to put some offset rings on it... or maybe it was offset bases. when i got to the range, i fired 1 shot and as i was loading my second round, noticed that the scope was loose on the bases. the rings were tight, but the rings on the bases were not. where the rings mount to the base is one large wheel nut on the left side for each of the rings (i think i've been told those are weaver style). these were the problem, and after the flat-head fix, everything works fine. |

Dyelynn - glad that you were able to fix your rig but he has a scope mount that looks like this and there is no place to use a flat head screwdriver on it. The idea is the same however make sure the bolts secure it to the rifle are tight not over tightened but certainly not loose.

nope, no place for a flathead... but those look like 1/2" nuts on there... maybe 3/8"... same scenario though, they can be loose, and just need to be tightened...

True but I suspect he will have to shim the scope to change the angle enought to zero it or switch scope or mount. Personally I would probably switch scope and go to a 6x42 Super Sniper.
