I am new to scopes and found this forum via an Google search.

My question is: I have a Rock River 20" AR15 .223 setup for varmint hunting, heavy barrel, match trigger, adj. stock, bi-pod...etc. ( I can hear the traditional AR guys chocking now !) I am moving from sights to scopes. My budget is about $500 or so and I expect to shoot anywhere from 50 to 400 yards at ground hogs and coyotes around the area. Accuracy is excellent however, I am limited with the present sights, hence the scope.

I have searched and have found Nikon to be in my price range. Models I am looking at include:
  1. Monarch 5x20x44 SF/BDC,
  2. M223 3x12x42 BDC,
  3. Monarch 4x16x42 BDC
  4. Coyote Special 4.5x14x40 BDC.

Can any one comment on my choices so far or suggest other brands or models that would be more suitable. If I recall from a forum search, overall magnification is not as important as lower range magnification. And a big ended bell is not always the best choice as I will always hunt during daylight hours.

Also, where is the best place to purchase a new or demo scope ? I was told at my local gun shop, The Fin, that manufactures set prices and no low end pricing is allowed.

I welcome all comments and suggetions for my new AR Varmint setup !

http://swfa.com/  This place runs this site and has great prices and will price match.  They offer demo products for sale that are either used or dealer samples here. http://www.samplelist.com/
Bushnell has some great scopes that woudl be in your price range as well.  Don't neglect the mounting solution for your AR. It will need to be high to give you good eye position. A lot of guys use the Burris PEPR its what I use and works well.    This would be a great scope for your needs http://swfa.com/Bushnell-25-10x40-Elite-4200-Rifle-Scope-P245.aspx and its under the $500 mark.  It has good low end and 10x will be plenty to 400 yds. IMO

I would go wiht the 3-9x42 Super Sniper however if you must go with one of the ones you mentioned the Monarch in a 4-16 would be a reasonable choice.  When you are talking prairie dogs the coyote special reticle just wont work for you there is no fine center aiming point only a large circle.  That large circle and the smaller ones work for quick distance rangefingind and are workable with a fast moving coyote, but not something requiring precision.

I dont really care for the BDC reticle on a Nikon I have.

Burris PEPR, after getting it today dont know how I lived without it, fantastic mount.

Weaver Grand Slam from here like 360 in a 6-20 I think it was, plus the free canvas bag.

I shoot coyotes and pigs with mine.  I think we are close to the same rifle.  RRA, 20" bull barrel, etc.  I have a Super Sniper 10x42.  Would not change anything.  Good Luck!

I think I've got the same model  RRA  Predator/Pursuit 20" heavy bull SS.....  I finally settled on a FFP scope.   The "Falcon Menace 4-14x44FFP modified Mil-Dot MOA".....   I've had it on for about a year and have a good time learning to use the FFP........

I just bought the Nikon M223 with a 20 MOA incline built into the mount, it was a tough one
to decide, now I have not tried it out yet, 100-102 deg. does not make if fun, you have to go with the Nikoplex to get the new rapid action turret and not with the BDC, for what I have been told, which is a shame, once you get your 100yds established, to go to 200yd.
just rotate the upper knob to #2, that gives you a dead on at 200yd and so on, will know how that works when weather  gets into the upper 80's to low 90's, but that 100 just seems like a 20-30deg. jump instead of 10-15deg.!!!, will let you all know, plus it all was a good price
 FWIW, thanks

Ron

My son has one of these on a .223  Tikka and seems to do real well out to at least 400  yds using a 60 gr VMAX Horniday pushed by Varget.
