Im looking fgor a new AR-15 upper for long range shooting. 600 yrds. with a SS barrel. I saw a American spirit arms AR at the NRA convention with a side charging handle seemed very nice for around $900- upper. They claim .5 moa. lifetime warranty. Les Baer is another for around $1,200-upper. I like the ASA but the Baer has the reputation. Any comments or suggestion appreaciated. Also up in the air on barrel length, 20", 22" or 24"?

long range use would be better suited with a longer barrel for increased muzzle velocity

You should also look at the very well made Stag Arms uppers. Stag is the same as CMT, which makes parts for several brands.

http://www.whiteoakarmament.com/   John Hollinger's uppers are the ones winning the matches.

+1 on White Oak uppers. Plus they are reasonably priced.

Don't know how deep you want to get into it. Most ar barrels are not match grade when compared to the same thing in a bolt gun. Most are from Shaw or Wilson, and represent various grades depending on the final use of the gun (and the final selling price brackett the marketer wishes to compete in). Also check out JP which is another big name and equally as famous, just in different circles. Air gauged premium barrels installed by an ar mechanic will give the best results, however you may not need this level. It depends if the lower is set up to take advantage of the increase in control over the shooting system the better barrel offers.

the barrel length depends in large on how front end heavy you want the gun, which then is determined by the dia. of the barrel. Long range shooting begins at 600 yds, and ar15 are used when you don't have something better. Any of these barrel lengths will work well from 0-600, and for that matter 18" works great also.
