Which of these scopes would you choose for use on a 20" AR15 with an ARMS #2 carry handle mount.  The Burris FullField TAC 3-9x40, Burris FullField TAC30 3-9x40, Leupold MK AR 3-9x40 or the Nikon M-223 2-8x32.  All of these scopes are in the $300~$350 range.  If I can up the budget to $600 the  SWFA SS 3-9x42 or the Vortex 2.5-10x44 Viper PST 30mm scope are options.  I have ARMS #21 30mm scope rings, but I can get inserts or 1" rings if I get a 1" tubed scope.  Which would you pick in each price range?

I would bypass the lower range all together and put a 3-9 SS on it.  They are by far superior to anything else you've listed and are a great fit on the AR platform.  I run one on a 6.5 Grendel and soon on a  16" 223 and they are simply awesome.

First choice would be the 3-9 Super Sniper second choice would be the 6x42 Super Sniper which fits the lower budget price.  I have both.  I will also mention that my favorite scope on an AR is a Trijicon Compact ACOG and I have those in 1.5x and 3x

It's really hard to beat that combo for all around general use (non-CQB).

Problem you got is you are mounting a scope on a carry handle.  That creates all kinds of issues.  Seriously, if you want to scope your AR you will be much better off buying a stripped flattop upper and having it installed on your gun.

^ what he said.  i'd make the goal to go after something similar to what Jon A. posted.  If it really gets "carried" for frequent use situations, look into getting a sling attachment and ditching the handle.  I wouldn't want to carry it by the handle anyway with an optic like that sitting on top.

I would go flat top too.  But either way you go, my vote would be for the 3-9 SS.  Great scope.  I love mine.

I realize that a flat top AR is better for mounting a scope, but my Colt AR15A2 Government model has a fixed carry handle and I do not intend to change this rifle.  Looks like I will probably get the SWFA SS 3-9x42.  Does anyone know if it will be available with illumination next year?

Rumor has it that a 1-4, and a 4-16 or 5-20 sometime in 2011.  There are also rumblings of a 2.5-10 but no date.

I was in the same boat as you - want some glass for my AR.  I just couldn't keep waiting any longer, and ordered the SS 3x9x42 a few minutes ago.  If I can't live without illumination, I'll deal with that later.  I just came to the conclusion that one can keep waiting, and waiting for the next best, bigger, better thing and never end up with a scope.  The SS is very highly recommended around here and on the hide and if those who know much more about scopes than me say it's good to go, that's good enough for me.

I put that cheap leupold ($250) on my pre ban Colt A2's carry handle.  Doesn't bother me none as far as hitting what I'm aiming at.  I might change it to that Nikon 223 scope though.

I have an Acog on the 6.8 stag and I am in luv with that little girl, but it was around a 1000 bucks and it's a flat top; been riding with that gun on the snowmachine of late.

How can you beat that Nikon monarch 223 scope for the money?  I'd probably look around for a flat top down the road and set it up with a real $$$$ scope like everybody has around here. We have 5 AR's now, and I'm really excited about all the scopes & mounts & night vision that's available for AR's but I still use that cheap leupold for my range off the porch or hunting with 223.
