I'm new here and would like to get some advice and guidance on what scope and mounts to use on a new AR-15. I have some in mind but would like some input from the experts.

Last week I ordered a DPMS Panther Super Bull 24 with a fluted 1 in 8 twist barrel in .223 so I can shoot heavier bullets and a low-rider flat-top receiver instead of the high-rider it would have came with, however, now I must endure the 14 to 18 week wait for it be delivered to my local gun shop!!!  It will mostly be used to shoot from 100 to 500 yards at the range and occasionally to dispatch a varmit or 2 when I go coyote hunting with my uncle. Here in coastal western Washington State, we usually have some long shots as the logged off areas are usually very steep ground and the shots on coyotes are up to sometimes 800 yards down into the bottom of a canyon and occasionally a very close shot if you catch one in the middle of a logging road. I'm used to variable power scopes in the range of 6-18 x 50 on my 700 Rem. hunting rifle (300 Rem. Ultra Mag.), 6-24 x 50 on my Howa .223 heavy barrel, and 8-32 x 50 on my Ruger 77 MKII Target Grey heavy barrel in .308. I'm hoping that by the time the new rifle arrives, Super Sniper or Xotic will have their new variable stuff out and am also considering a Niteforce 5.5-22 x 56 NXS. My "other half" is not very pleased about me ordering the rifle so I'm pretty sure I may get "cut off" for a real long time if I get a $1400 Niteforce!!!  As for mounts I was thinking either Badger Ord. or Leupold.

The 8-32 x 50 scope on my Ruger is a older Tasco World Class Plus with Target turrets. I can drive tacks with it if I do my part. The $150 I paid for it about 6 or 7 years ago was well worth it. The one on my 300 Rem. U.M.  is a Nikon Buckmaster and is holding up very well. On the Howa is a Barska 6-24 x 50 IR Swat scope and so far it is holding together - maybe I got lucky and got a good one although a .223 isn't all that punishing and I'm not going to put it on the 300 mag. just to see if I can shake the guts loose in it, however, if it does fail on the 223, it should make an excellent target for the 300 the next time I shoot that rifle!!!

This forum is a valuable source for info-keep up the good work!!!

Badgers are way better than leupolds, and I can't see a difference in quality when I compare TPS rings to leo's mk4. take a look at IOR tactical <I put a scope with similar magnification to what you are looking for. remember you need high rings in order to bring the scope up to eye level.

I think that the Super Sniper 10x42   would be a lot of fun for you on that rifle. And the price won't be nearly as upsetting to your wife.
