Greetings,

I built an AR-15 for varmint hunting & long range shooting. The upper is a White Oak Armament 24" w/flat top receiver (Picatinny rail, I believe?). I'm strongly considering a Bushnell 4200 scope and need recommendations on rings and a base. Can I mount a 20 MOA base to the existing rail? Do I really NEED it? What size rings do I need?

Any and all opinions appreciated (even other scope rcommendations, since I'll probably get them!)

Thanks, Greg

What caliber and twist rate do you have and which Bushnell scope are you looking toward getting? There are quite a few 4200 series models.

Unless you are doing some real long-range target work, I doubt you will need a 20 MOA base. Most .223  varmint shooting wil be done at less than 300 to maybe 400 yards tops, beyond that wind will wreck things in a hurry. And unless you have a 1-7 twist and are planning on shooting 80-grain MatchKings or something like that in some sort of F-Class Palma-type competition, you probably won't be doing any thousand -yard target stuff with the .223, either.
AccuracySpeaks used to make a good, long 20 Moa riser that mounted to a Flattop, others probably do, as well... A google search should turn up something. I'll check tomorrow.

Ronk,

It's a .223 w/1:8 twist. I'm looking at a 4200, 6-24 X 40 - OR - a 6500, 2.5-16 X 42 (it appears that the prices have come down on the 6500's).

Thanks, Greg

I have a Bushnell 4200 4-16x40 on a White Oak flat top with Armalite one piece mount and ever since I got in one of the 3-9x42 super sniper variables I have been thinking about trading my Bushnell in on  a second one for this gun.  I think 6x on the low end is probably not a good choice and the 2.5-16x42 would be a much better choice. Knowing what I know now I would use a LaRue mount but Badger Ordnance does make a plus 22 moa rail riser and if you used that the medium high rings should be about the right height with the riser.   Be careful about adding plus moa though because on scopes that dont have lots of internal adjustment it can cause you problems being able to dial down enough to zero at 100 and still have some room left below.  It's not good to have the adjustment screwed all the way down constantly.

Thanks for the info.  I think I've decided on the 6500 tactical (2.5-16 x 42).  The slight price increase  over the 4200 seems justifiable.

Thanks, Greg
