i have a colt ar national match.   i would like to try to use it for some medium distance paper punching and shoot what ya brought gun on some competitions.   i realize it's not my best choice for a benchrest rifle but it's what i own....   my other choice is  a colt sauer in 30-06 which although it is a very accurate rifle is still no varmint or bench gun.  so i thought i would use the ar to see how i like doing it while figuring out if i do what kind of rifle i want to get.

so i need a mount for an ar15 carry handle and set of rings to mount a swarovski 3-9x36 scope on.  does anybody have any opinions on whether to get the A.R.M.S #2 extended picatinny or a cheaper one...    somehow saying i want to shoot for accuracy and then asking if i should use a ''cheap'' mount don't really go together do they  :--)  but i know they make them and don't know if they are any good or not.  (i'm thinking they aren't and you get what you pay for here....)   i know IOR makes the same carry handle type mount (not a cheapie) and don't know whether the arms or ior is better or the same.   i  also would like to use the throw lever rings if anyone has opinions on those.

i came across the IOR stuff while looking on their site because i'm thinking of getting their 9-36x56 tactical scope with a 35mm tube.

any opinions on this stuff is appreciated.   i have 1 A.R.M.S mount for an aimpoint already so i'm familiar with their stuff.

Welcome to Optics Talk!! We're glad your here.

You'll be happier either shooting irons with the upper you have, or switching to a flat top upper.
Not what you wanted to hear, I know but, I have never used any sort of carry handle mount that I liked.
Sounds like your putting together a nice AR, why not make it enjoyable in the process?

I also freely admit I haven't used every configuration out there, so take that into consideration. Have you asked the dudes over at AR15.com what they think?

i stuck something up on the ar15.com but didn't get any replys.   keep in mind that i'm not building an AR and i already own the national match so what i'm wanting to do is just put a base and some rings on it and use a 3x9 swarovski that i already own.    i'm not really being a very big spender here am i...   :--)   personally, i think i have a rifle that would be quite a bit more accurate than this AR match, but it's in 30-06 and shooting it all the time is gonna beat me up more (i have a bad shoulder which makes it even worse)

but i thought i would like to go out and try going to  some of these shoot anything you own matches and see if i even like doing it.   i've been looking at buying a cooper of montana varmit/light weight rifle to use if i like doing it

i realize the AR i have is not optimum especially with a carry handle, but it's what i own and right now i don't want to buy another rifle to use.   i also don't want to make major changes on this colt .   distances i would shoot it at are probably from 100 to 300 yards

I think I understand what you are trying to do. Come up with something to play the game to see if you want to invest the money to be competative. If this is the case then get something cheap and get some sorta cheek riser for the stock; Sportsman Guide, Cheaper Than Dirt, or Tapco may have something.
The problem with mounting a scope on a AR-15 handle is it puts the scope up so high you can't get a consistant cheek weld without a riser. Your mechanical offset between scope and bore is also a problem especially on shots under 50yds.

given the trigger (lack of trigger) and the scope mounting you will be using don't expect much more than beer can accuracy past 100 yds. several cheek risers are made to accomadate this type of high scope mt. check brownells.

thanks for the info.   after reading your posts about this IOR scope i'm rethinking my wanting one....Sad

i've never had an IOR before but generally like european glass a lot which prompted me to look into them for optic quality for dollar invested.

if you don't mind my asking, in this focal range and price what do you prefer?   NF, leupold, IOR...???    i would really like an illuminated reticle.   i've heard the NF's are nice but then hear they're optically sometimes not really all that good, and have read the same type of things about leupold.   then hear the opposite.   seems some people either swear by leupold or swear at them....   i must admit though i keep re-thinking the leupold and then read something that turns me off again

thanks for your help dale

opinions vary, each person "sees" colors and spectral images different, some other differences that are not brought up often, but noticable in the $1500 and up price range are the apparent contrast in bright light from white and "black", apparent size of targets and milling the distances in targets having different colors and of course sensitivity to the more blue hues in low light situations. any differences in the scope become more apparent if the shooter is "hanging" on the target for long periiods of time such as a military or le sniper. Personally I can't tell that much difference as I concentrate on the shot (whats going on in the local of the target, the grip, breathing etc.).  and the next event, movement or whats going on with the action and trying to read the strike, (seldom get the benefit of a spotter). NF are great, leos are smaller and lighter, and do the same job just as fast, hopefully IOR quality control will pick up.
