i'm paying off a dpms .308t 16 inch which is a thousand bucks . definitely stretching my budget. i can't help but be drawn to a springfield armory m1a though. i read so many good things about it. for hunting and target shooting out to 200 yards with my ss10x, is it worth stretching my budget another 350-450 bucks on the springfield? help

They are doing some awsome things with the AR platform as far as accuracy goes.  M1A's are pretty darn accurate but it all depends what you want.

The bore line to cheek rest on M1A's are set up for iron sites. To get correct cheek weld an elevated check rest such as a McMillian stock is the best way to go. Then there is the problem of a good scope mount. All are in some way quick release and must sit high enough over the receiver to allow the action to cycle. On the other hand most scope mounts for FN look alikes are on the dust cover which is hardly a solid mounting surface and the AR you are considering has a much better sight plane and scope mounting set up. The best M1A usually run a McMillian adjustable and Kreiger barrel, and are capable of sub-min. accuracy. Of course this is another $1000. The best AR types require the same type of attention-and additional cost. I don't think it is realistic to compare either of the more common "shooters". The M1A has by far and away the best stock trigger, which even on the common guns come close to a match grade on an AR type. But the AR is less "finicky" about hand loads as I have had M1A's double and on one literally blow the back of the receiver out. (yes they replaced it but my heart still skips when I flash back). My personal choice in going the route you have chosen are the match grade FN, and they are worth the extra bucks.

The FN is the best of the three rifles mentioned. DSA makes an excellent version of this weapon and are comparably priced with the M1A and AR's.
