So discussing with a friend last night on the phone, he wants to built an AR based on the 223 but using the 80gr AMAX's.   He doesn't have ryhme or reason why but he just does.  I know you can't load them mag length for feeding in an AR-15 type platform..... He question to me was could he built an AR-10 platform and that work for 223 and feed right using that bullet.  I've tried to convince him that there are better suited rounds and he would be underutilizing the 80gr AMAX in only a 223 casing but he said thas what he wants to try.

Any advise. Is it doable?

No.  You would have to design and build a new bolt head and a special magazine, for starters.  The larger AR10 bolt carrier would probably have too much mass and screw up the timing.

If he wants to shoot 80 AMAXs, he needs a bolt action.

The competition guys use a magazine follower that holds the bolt open after each shot don't they?

Such as the:
Satern Single Shot Magazine Follower AR-15 Polymer

Just did a search on a popular gun parts web store.

This guys builds WSSM uppers that fit on a AR-15 lower.  He could then shoot the 80 grain amax and actually have a lot of powder to push it.  http://www.dtechsuperstore.com/new_wssm.htm  Might be worth looking at.

I have heard is wait time is quite long.  I was going to go that way, but then I found a 223 wssm bolt gun.

The secret to success at 600yds with  .223  AR-15 is
75 gr Berger    24.1 gr  RL15 loaded 1.919 OAL and you load them one at a time in the rifle
These have to be touching the lands to shoot well.

The Amax 77 the SMK 80  all load too long to fit the mag but you can run them one at a time.
builds the best ones and their guns win matches.  Have them build the upper complete and put your lower together yourself if you must or  buy a lower from Rock River and pay the extra $50 for their match trigger which is ok but not as good as some that are out there for several hundred.
