I just had this VX-3  4.5x14x40 Mounted to my Bushmaster. I want to buy some LaRue Mounts instead of what you see in the picture. Will these LaRue mounts clear the scope plus allow the scope to sit forward another .5 in. Your Experience would be helpful before I throw  200.00 worth of LaRue Tactical SPR / M4 Scope Mount QD LT-104  at this rig. Thanks, JF

Burris AR-P.E.P.R. 1 Burris AR-P.E.P.R. 1" Scope Mount
Stock # - 410343
  • Matte
  • Picatinny Tops
$69.95
Add Burris AR-P.E.P.R. 1 Scope Mount to Cart
This is a less expensive alternative but I would rather go with the La Rue.

NOPE! If you say the LaRue,
Warne Torque Wrench Warne Torque Wrench
Stock # - TW1
then thats what Im gonna order, plus I will order the wrench..I want it to be right and it needs to be moved 1/2 forward for it to be proper. I do not like the way it looks either sitting on there. It looks like it was not put together with proper rings and mounts beacause it wasn't.. LOL!

I have used Larue and American Defense
they both do the same exact thing

ADM just came out with the scout version which is a little lighter and uses one throw lever instead of 2 and can be had for about 135 bucks, I have one and it works perfect

I like Larue stuff a lot, but they are not the only ones making high quality, true RTZ mounts

Are you planning to mount the LaRue on your riser or on the rail?

With the LaRue mount, you "might" clear the fold down rear site.

I assume, from the rear pop-up, that you also have a front pop-up, are they ever needed?  I personally don't mount pop-ups on a rifle with traditional optics, your mileage will vary.  With a red dot, I usually do, since the red dot can fail.  Scopes generally don't fail in that way.

If you take off the rear pop-up, you are definitely good to go and will have the flexibility to mount the scope with good eye relief.

Good luck.  You now have the expensive stuff, and getting it all put together and working as needed can sometimes be the most challenging (and frustrating) part.  Mounts are more important than most people know.

Yes I mounted a pop-up Front Site I got from Bushmaster and the rear pop-up is a low profile arms site.. They are simply "back up" sites and are very accurate ..My plan was to leave them on in case they are ever needed, thats why the QR Rings for the scope.

The risers came with the rifle, I would prefer to not use the risers at all. Someone showed me this LaRue set up and the picture has a 2.5x10x56 Trijicon scope setting on a Flat top rail with pop-up rear sites...Its similar but its a different rifle and rear sight flavor..SO, we shall see? I will order the LaRue mount today and hopefully after its all done with or without the rear site it will be what I want. Right now I am not that happy with the mounting system, although I can get to the charging handle easily.   The more I look at this rear site, I think Im going to remove it and leave the front one on. The rear site can be mounted fairly quickly. I can stash it in the but plate storage compartment.... My intent was to make this AR as versatile as possible as far as Varmint Rifles go...
Barrel is  1-8 twist and I will be reloading 77gr HPBT MG, RL-15, using Lapua Brass. Im also going to try the 70gr TSX BT's Bullets using the same stuff.

Well you probably chose the right scope for using a fold down rear, as Leupolds typically have a smaller eyepiece than many others.

If the rear of the scope doesn't clear the irons then I'd look at Troy's flip up BUIS because the Troy sits so low that almost anything will clear.

Your point is well made about scopes not being subject to the same failures as a red dot but I still would not do without a back up iron sight (BUIS) with a scope that powerful. It becomes a hinderence at close ranges and in very low light. The nice thing about the LaRue is that they return to zero when removed. They also make a replacemet ring cap that allows you to mount a Dr. Optics red dot above and to the left/right of the scope. It ain't cheap but if I were running a scope that powerful I'd invest in one.

Sorry Mr Sholling, I really like your ideas and you are very helpful but I cannot put any more weight on this rig. Im to damn beat up to pack it right now as it is...I do have a 3x10x42 I could put on this rifle that would work nicely as well.    The LaRue is ordered! . Im going to have to get some pointers from you guys about mounting. I ordered the Torque Wrench from SWFA like was suggested and some other mounts for another rig...I think I will get a  Rifle cradle to do this work on, I may be doing some scope swapping now...Damn its nice to finally have enough scopes to switch around if I need to, Who would have ever thought.. I can remember barely being able to buy a box of ammo to go Deer Huntin....Life really does get better after 50!!!!LOL!
