Hi guys,

First post for me but I've been reading for a longtime and value your opinions.

Looking at the Mueller APT or Swift Premier Tactical.  I had an APV a few years ago and really liked it.  I'm guessing the APV would be similar optically.  I've never owned a Swift, but like the features on their Tactical model (30mm, side focus, capped turrets).

Anyone care to share their opinion on these two scopes?  There's some reviews on the APT, but little on the Swift.  The Swift seems like a good buy, but the lack of feedback on it make me leary.  These scopes are about the same in terms of cost.  I'd also consider a Redfield 4-12x if I didn't feel the need to twiddle turrets.  I'd like to keep cost under $200, and the scope will be mounted on a Tikka Varmint in 223.

Thanks,

J

Swift produces an above average scope for a below average price.  I was just about to buy a scope I didn't need because it was a Swift and on the sample list... fortunately someone bought before I did... dang it..
Opinion,untempered by fact,is ignorance.

Hello and welcome to Optics Talk!

Is this scope for target shooting? I ask because I'm wondering if you can get by with a fixed power.
If at first you don't secede...try..try again.

I'll be shooting small varmints (rodents) out to 300 yards, and steel out as far as the elevation adjustment will allow.  I'm not opposed to a fixed power but would prefer a variable.  I had a 16x SS once and it was a decent scope, but very dim.

Thanks,

J

I concur. A variable would be better for varmints.

Can you raise your $200 budget up to $300? This price point, $300, raises your options substantially.

I'd prefer to stay under $200, but I might be able to go $300.  What would you recommend for $200, and $300 ranges?

For under 2 bills I'd look at the Vortex Crossfire SWFA $99 special.  Many have had them perform well for years with no issues at all. And being vortex got great customer service to help if you need it.

Thanks SVT.  I thought about gettings a Crossfire but have seen numerous reports of failures at other forums.  I own other Vortex products and trust their customer service, but the shear volume of problems has made me leery of the Crossfire lineup.

I'm not going to argue that but I will say that more failure stories make it to the "press" than the sucess stories.  There are several members of theis forum running them and have used them with no issues for years.  I myself had one go belly up, it was replaced.  No more hicups sense.  Just got another one.  The good thing about it is no matter what I know a quick call to vortex and I can have it fixed.
