First, let me say that this is a great web site.  Really good info.

Now down to business.  Needing to put a scope on my new custom made 35 whelen.  I am normally a Leopold Vari X II guy, and I've always been pleased, but with this gun, I want to make a big step up.  I am not planning on shots over 350 yards, and this rifle is meant for Elk.

I went to Gander Mountain today to compare scopes, and I was very impressed with the zeiss Conquest 3x9x40.  Here comes the sticky part.  They also had a Swarovski 2x7x36 for the same price on clearance.  Which way would you go?  Please, no other suggestions.  I really want to focus on these two scopes.

I personally like the Swarovski more, they both have high quality optics and in this segment differences are minor, but swarovski is tougher than Zeiss, and doesen't have cheesy plastic parts.

Woots,

What Gander Mountain store where you at?  I may have to see if they have any more of the swaro 2x7's after you buy yours.

Regards,

CJ

Optically speaking I like the Swaro, but I like a little more magnification than 7x and I prefer a 40mm objective over a 36mm. Both are excellent scopes, I think this one will boil down to personal preference.

I don't think Swarovski ever made a 2-7X36, they made a 3-9X36, which they have been making for quite sometime.  Depending on the year of production of the scope, you might be better off getting the Conquest, because of newer technology.  If the Swarovski scope is a late 99 into a 2000 model, it will have the Swarobright coating on the lenses, which I feel like would be a better optical choice over the Zeiss.  Either way, you are definitely in the right class of optics.

Update: I went back to take a closer look at both scopes.  The previous visit, I wan't able to look at the Swarovski, because they were out.  This time they had them in, BUT, it wasn't a Swarovski.  The scope is a 2x7x36 American Hunter Kahles.  Looking through the scope, I personally feel the Zeiss is miles ahead.   I like the reticle better, and images seem much more crisp; sharp.  I did take a look at the top end Swarovskis and I could definitely see the quality, but honestly, I don't feel they were much better than the Zeiss.  Best scope for the dollar that I have ever looked through.
