I am extremely happy with my new Vortex Razor 85HD spotting scope with its 20-60x zoom. It is great for spotting bullet holes and for general viewing. I am now interested in the Long Eye Relief eye piece which is advertised as fixed 23x and 31mm eye relief, for when I am shooting prone.

Has anyone tried the fixed LER eye piece? Was it less critical of eye position than most? How was the field of view? Any other comments?

I got the Vortex LER1 (31mm Long Eye Relief) eyepiece for my Razor 85HD.

The image is clearer and brighter as compared to the stock eyepiece (20x-60x).

However, I have to hold my eye a few centimeters behind the eyepiece to get the full image. Vignetting starts to happen when I move my eye closer. The adjustable eyecup can move back only about 1/2 cm before it unscrews completely. Not far enough back for me. I am not sure if there is a trick to moving the eyecup back further (I just got this eyepiece and it didn't come with any manual).

On the other hand, my primary interest is digiscoping and with this eyepiece the image quality is better and I don't have to move the camera lens so close that I have to worry about scratching the lens.

Thanks Sukamar. You say it is clearer and brighter than the standard zoom, eye piece, wow this must be clear and bright as even the standard one was good. Can you tell me if it was critical of side to side eye placement and back and forth eye placement (It doesn't like it close I see).

I will be using this scope when shooting prone and was hoping it would be very forgiving of eye position so I didn't have to spend as much time finding a sight picture. My current 14mm XW Pentax eye piece is fairly good with this, I was just hoping the Vortex would be even more forgiving.

My instinct is to press against the eyepiece's eye-cup and instantly I get vignetting. So I suppose it takes a little getting used to. I have absolutely no experience in shooting but I imagine if its anything like this guy (from Clint Eastwood's new movie) then having your eye back is definitely a good thing otherwise the recoil will give you a black eye. I notice though that his cheek is resting on the stock. My spotting scope is the angled version and holding my head hovering above the scope is definitely a pain in the neck.

Sukamar, rifle scopes have at least 3" of eye relief so you don't get whacked when it recoils. You get the same issue you found if you move your eye closer.

When I use the spotting scope, I will be turning my head out of shooting position to glance at the spotting scope for a few seconds out of the corner of my eye. If I wear shooting glasses with my current eye pieces, the edge of the glasses and the frame hit the EP. I will likely go for the LER eye piece and let other know how it goes for my application.

If I move the Eyecup back to its last thread and wear glasses, there's perhaps another cm between my glasses and the eyecup. So you're unlikely to have the problem you are having now with the stock EP.

Do relate your experiences with the new EP on this thread. In particular, I'd be interested in knowing if there's a way to move the Eyecup back further.
