I'm building a SPRish 6.5G and would like to put some good glass on it.  I've been reading alot on the SWFA 5-20 and like what I'm reading.  Are there any plans for somthing higher than 20x?  I'd hate to buy the 5-20 and you guys release a 5-25 or similar in the next 6 months/year.
If not, maybe other scopes in the 5-25, 6-24 range around the $1k mark?

Thanks,
m6z

The glass on the SS5-20 should be better than most all $1000 optics. You can do better with SS at 20x than  inferior glass at 25x.
Do you really NEED 24/25x magnification?

I may not.  Had the chance to look though a nice Leupold at 25x a couple weeks ago.  It was fantastic.  I could see bullet holes in the target 200yds away.  I fould this to be a benifit.  No need for a spotting scope.

You can look at the new Zeiss HD5 series optics i prefer Zeiss glass over the Leupold. I hear Vortex Viper Pst is ok, and Sightron SIII is supposed to be very nice for the money. All though you will probaly get more for your money with the SS. Glass quality, FFP reticle, lots of adjustment. warranty to beat the rest.

the SS5-20 makes the MK4 line up look like they came from Kmart. i have a 5-20 on a 300WM, and it's a steel slammer at 1400. the SS is a great scope. but the reticle is thick at ELR, the mag ring is super stiff, and the turrets have to be played with to line up perfectly (on mine at least). i was gonna trade in for a razor, but after looking thru one, i could not see where the extra $500 was going.

Mirage can be a real pain on those over 16x power scopes, my friend. I would probably never consider a scope past 20x.

Good points.  I've currently got one of the fixed 16x and I'm happy with it.  I'll probably end up with the 5-20.  Now I've just got to put togeather the $1300.

My wife bought me a Hensoldt 6-24x72... can't be compared to any other scope.  No flaws  I've not had a problem with mirage... however, it IS a variable.  I find higher power scopes useful in many situations. You don't HAVE to have one, but it can be convenient.

The difference between 20x and 25x is ?????????????????????????????Who Cares.
I have a Leupold 8.5-25 and a Super Sniper 5-20 actually Im not sure I really need over 16x but I like the SS 5-20 real well.

Great advice Mark.

In this case, I honestly would suggest saving just a little more and going with the SS 5-20. There is nothing remotely close it price wise. Optically it stands up to several of other comparable German made products, but doesn't tout the exuberant price tag.

Another scope, I would suggest looking into, because of its design, would Sightron's S III.

It supplies the large magnification that you would like to have and will still have great peripheral FOV.

I think you would see better with the SS 5-20 even though it is a 20x verses the Leupold 25x. The higher the magnification the better the glass needs to be. Other wise you are just magnifying the imperfections.

I have an SPR-ish 6.5Grendel (18" mid-weight barrel) that is impressively accurate, so I often use it for my scope tests.

Because of that I have had a considerable variety of scopes on it from 2.5-10x42 Leica to 5-25x56 S&B and everything in between including every scope mentioned here so far.

Something the size of the 5-25x56 is too big for this rifle.  SS 5-20x50 is about as big as I would go and honestly, something a bit smaller is a better fit.  I am probably going to settle mine with the new SS 3-15x42 semi-permanently.  Both scope size and magnification range match the rifle and the cartridge very nicely.

All that having been said, if you want haigh magnification at around $1k or under, your best bet is one of Sightorn S3 scopes.  If you can scrounge up a little more, go for the SS 5-20x50.  That is what I have on my 338LM and I could not be happier.

ILya

How does the Bushnell DMR 3.5-21 stack up against the SWFA 5-20?

Thanks.  I'm sold.  Looks like purchaseing a 5-20 SWFA will be in my future.  Been thinking about upgrading my current fixed 16x to one of the 3-15's as well.
