I'm aware of Burris Signatures, of course, but inasmuch as they've been essentially unavailable (at least some very common configurations) for a year or so, is anyone else making that style of ring?
I find that (gimbal mount rings) to be my most-preferred way to address ring needs. Thanks for any help or pointers. |

I do not think I have ever heard them referred to as gimbal-style rings, but I am guessing he means something like this:

The Burris signature ring inserts are radiused/spherical on the outside diameter, allowing them to rotate in any direction inside spherical mating surfaces inside the i.d. of the rings, yet remain contained in the rings. This is referred to as a gimbal coupling. Gimbals are also used on drive shafts and certain types of mounts that require freedom of movement in all directions radially and axially.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimbal I don't know if they still do, but Jewell used to make rings with the gimbal inserts. Sako has the inserts in their Optilock style rings, but they are specific to Sako rifles. I'm not aware of any others off the top of my head. Edited by RifleDude - July/16/2012 at 15:06 |

I know what a gimbal is (oddly enough they are at the very center of what I do for a living), but I do not think I have heard this type of rings called gimbal rings before. It is a very descriptive name though. I think I will start using it (I am writing an article on mounts, and I will use it there).

I'm sorry, everybody. You've come to the right conclusion about what was going on in my head; I was thinking of rings with a pivotable insert similar to the Burris Signature series of rings.
I was not aware of Jewell rings. I'll search around for info to see whether they're making a ring of this type. I'm unclear as to what Burris' issue is, other than claims of moving production, but I surely wish they (or someone!) would get this type of ring back on the market.
