I have a new Remington 700, 30.06 (long action) and a .308 (short action) that I will be mounting bases to.
No scopes yet. I will be trying out different scopes of mine and maybe even a scope or two from a freind, until I figure out exactly what I want.
I am going with EGW Picatinny rails so my other scopes can be easily changed to the new guns.
My thought was to buy 2-1/2 or 3" rails to give me some more flexibility with mounting for eye releif.
Is there any drawback to extended rails?
Thanks,
Al

I just bought one for my 40-x for that very reason.  No issues with it thus far.

Seems like, with a regular bolt-action rifle and a typical scope, an extended base would necessitate the use of higher rings than you might want for the scope bell to clear the base.

You hit it on the nose.
I bought long and short.
The short fit my 50mm scope fine with low rings. The scope sat just above the barrel where I wanted it.
With the extended, it fit, but with only 1/32" clearance between the front and rear of the rail. I need medium rings to have any hope of moving the scope forward or backward.
No big deal, but the scope will sit a little higher than it otherwise would need to.
Thanks,
Al
