Just joined the forum although I have been lurking and reading for the last few weeks.  The wealth of information and opinions is almost overwhelming but I need to make a decision and would appreciate your help.
Back into target shooting after a 40+ year absence.  Picked up an older Remington 700 in .308 that shoots better than I do.  I bougtht a Leupold varix ii 3-9x40 with the rifle but have found that 9x isn't enough for these old eyes, even at only 100yds.  Although I'd like to shoot longer distances, a personal reality check and availability of ranges will probably limit me to under 500 yds.
I'm down to two choices, both mildot, that are readily available and under $700:
Used Leupold 6.5-20 from the vendor I bought the rifle from. (I know, bad English.) $650 and he'll credit my original Leupold purchase.
New Bushnell 6-24x50 Elite 4200 from SWFA - $570.
Thanks in advance for the advice to come.

The new bushnell 4200 would be my choice over a used Leupold unless we are talking like new mk4 with M3 knobs or something.  That Bushnell is one of my favorite tactical scopes.

May I also recommend this scope:

SIIISS624X50LRMDSightron 6-24x50 SIII 30mm Riflescope Sightron 6-24x50 SIII 30mm Riflescope
  • Matte
  • Mil-Dot
  • 30mm
  • Side Focus
  • Target Knobs

I think it is a step up from both the bushnell and the leupold.

If the Leupold is in good nick (that is the paintwork etc is not scratched etc as it gives some indication if the owner took care of it) I would go for it.
