I know northern Alabama deer are a bit "odd" as far as rut goes, but I have been walking my property fairly regularly the last few weeks, going over the past year's trails, looking for new places to "check" next year.   Over the past week, I've seen two brand new scrapes and over a half dozen brand new rubs... made within 24 hours of my discovery of them.  As a matter of fact, since deer season ended 31 Jan (our "rut" is supposed to be 2nd/3rd week of Jan), the rubbing and scraping activity has increased.

I've noticed that too, here is Shebly county.  Had a six point in the back yard that still had he's antlers. What's up with that?

I think they are becoming more and more like Axis deer... they're just breeding all year, now.  I saw a baby with spots a little over a week ago.

Sounds like you got a 8 to 10 doe to buck ratio, maybe worse. If a doe isn't bred she will cycle until she is. The bucks really don't care if its fall/winter or not. If he finds one ready to stand, he's gonna be after her. Unless you and your hunt budies decide to take as many doe (preferrably the dominant in each flamily group) as possible you'll keep seeing this. This may also be a sign of pending disaster. If you are seeing over browsing and poor looking deer, your area could be heading for wipe out. If CWD or some parasite gets in the area you'll see some sad and terrible stuff. I hope your local wildlife commission is aware of the potential out come. Nc has finally started giving us the tools needed to curb that problem here. But we still have a large number that refuse to shoot a doe. Gotta keep an open mind and be willing to pass the buck and bust the doe. We're all lookin forward to this season.
Go Get Em!

I hear you, SgtD.  Around here people will take the little bucks, even button bucks, before they will shoot a doe.  I try to take the does and leave the bucks.  Generally end up seeing the big ones I pass up going down the road on someone else's vehicle.  I get lots of good venison, though.  My greyhound and cats eat well.
However, the big 8-pointer I passed on this year made it through.  I saw him just a couple of weeks ago.  He was happy and so was I.

Good to hear, you know where he likes to travel, so you can be on him first chance you get. Like you said, most folk shoot because they say "If I don't the next guy will". I've been there, but decided that something had to be done. After three yrs. of talkin, I finally got a number of hunters to see thru the old school thinking "if you shoot the does you won't have any deer". It's been proven repeatedly Not True! Where I hunt now is on it's 9th yr. of the guide line I suggested and we are closing on record book trophies. Why 9yrs? Not everybody plays along. But it is still happening. If I had trusted the turret on my scope this past season I would have posted a pic of one of the better bucks on the property. But he'll be there this season with his group. I know where he lives! My best guestimation is we have a buck doe ratio of 4 to 1 and that is down from 8 to 1 nine yrs. ago. Plus by focusing on the dominant doe in each group, we are getting alot more satillite bucks to choose from.
Cost of having a trophy mounted is 225 to 300.00 around here. I'm not going to shoot a buck unless it's wall material so one is enough. Leaves plenty of season for pickin on does!

Same here in South Alabama, KB. Deer are rutting while the Turkeys are gobbling. I think it is about time to stretch a line on some bass, though.

You do see this problem alot.  Did some reading of a report the Drury brothers did a study on the deer harvested.  Late 80's bucks were heavier bodied/weighted more.  As they started to trophy hunt, body weight started to diminish as there were more deer on the land as no one was harvesting does.  They switched tactics, started shooting more does and body mass came back up.  See alot of buck only hunting here in SD as well.  Hard to believe someone would flat out refuse to harvest a doe.  Sometimes there is more fulfillment out of harvesting a hunter busting doe then a head to the ground buck, sometimes.

Like pyro, if it is legal, I shoot it.  While I would like to shoot a decent buck one day, I hunt to put meat in the freezer and spend time with my father and uncles.
