For the lack of something to do, I ordered the Vortex XBR crossbow scope (from another company) just to see what the guys on my crossbow forum were raving about. It's nice, although a little big for a crossbow, but they all said it had the best optics available. So I did a little test as it was getting dark today. I set all of the scopes on 5x - a Leupold VX-3 1.5-5x20mm, a Swarovski 3-9x36mm, a SWFA SS 3-15x42mm against this famous Vortex XBR 2.5-10x44mm. In low light, as expected the 20mm objective on the VX-3 was the dimmest, the 36mm Swarovski was next dimmest, but the SWFA SS 42mm appeared a bit brighter than the 42mm Vortex.

What seemed really amazingl was the Leupy, Swaro, and Vortex all had about the same clarity but the SWFA SS was the clearest. I was looking at tomato cages at 15 yards in the  back yard and the detail from the SWFA was incredible compared to the other 3. Maybe I should put the Super Scope on my crossbow!

Of the scopes you mention, only the SS is able to focus that close.  Both the Swaro and the Leupy have image focus set somewhere between 100 and 150 yards.  Depending magnification, at 15 yards there will varying degrees of de-focus in the image.

And the side focus of the SS was set a snitch over 100 meters - this is impressive.

If you are looking at something 15 meters away, why keep the side focus at 100 meters?  Then you end up effectiely looking at the depth of field of a particular scope where the SS with a long focal length objective will definitely have an advantage.

What magnifications did you test at?  Also, how dark was it?

I am not sure where Vortex set the focus on their crossbow scope, but I tested a couple of centerfire version of that scope and for that application I did not like it that much.

The SS is a very flexible design and if you can deal with the overall size on your crossbow,  can make a pretty good argument that it is a better version than the Vortex.
