I just recently purchase a new Alpen 788 spotting scope after reading quite a few good reviews and knowing that it was in my price range. I  have a question to anyone out there that owns this scope. Several of the reviewers of the scope said that the scope had an eyepiece sunshield in addition to the front extendable sunshield. One of the reviewer said to turn the eyepiece to the left, (counterclockwise), and the eyepiece sunshield would extend outward. So I tried turning mine to the left and it only appears that I may be removing the eyepiece - I only turned it about 1/8 of a turn. What gives??? I don't want to turn the eyepiece much further counterclockwise without knowing that it is acutually going to extend the eyepiece.
Thanks  Ross

The manual doesn't mention a sunshield for the eyepiece. The manual is basically 2 small paragraphs talking about focusing and the tripod.  rf

I believe they are actually talking about a twist-out eyecup.  From the pics I found online some 788s had a twist-out eyecup, and some had a fold-down rubber eyecup.

The eyecup serves two main purposes:

1.  To put your eye at the proper relief position from the eyepiece.

2.  To block peripheral light (including sunlight) from producing glare on the ocular lens.

I have heard people refer to the eyecup as a "sun-shade" several times.
