Yeah I do!  If I get away with the last statement I totally mis-judged this site!

It should be interesting to see how far it will go!  Should be quite a ride.

[QUOTE=geezer]Grafs has RE17 in stock in both 1 & 5 lb containers.  QUOTE]

WOW  I actually found some locally.  I have looked and called all over for RE17 and Hornady 130gr 270Win SSTs with out any luck.  I could mail order the powder but thats not cost effective.  Couldn't  find SSTs anywhere except Hornady website at top dollar.

Anyway I was on my way back from Gettysburg and passing thru McSherrystown and Hanover when I saw the light on in the window of the Powder Horn.  Its a little shop where I used to buy my black powder supplies.  They are only open 3 evenings a week now so I figured....what the h$ll....I would stick my head in.

Dude was loaded for BEER!!!  He had just about the entire Hornady line in stock and I was tickled pink!  I didn't see any sights of powder anywhere but nothing ventured nothing gained.  While I was browsing the store I asked if there was any chance that he had RE17?  Told him abou the new formulation and volocity increases, he just smiled.
I turned around and he holds up a bottle of it.  I was dumbfounded, I snatched it out of his hand so fast it startled both of us.  Sure enough it was datecoded July,2008.
Thru a big smile Iasked if he had any more?  I walked out with 2lbs and my SSTs, A very happy camper.

Now, to the reloading bench!  Who has worked up any 270-Win loads using it????

I also have had great results with test loads of RE 17.  July 4th weekend I chrono'd 3 different loads of RE 17 with 3 different bullets.

I used a Savage 111 300 Win Mag w/accutrigger and shot 165 gr. Grand Slam, Speer BTSP, and Sierra HPBT bullets.

With each bullet I used the following individually measured loads of powder- 69gr., 70 and 71.  The Sierra bullet, for each load, was the fastest in the group with the 71gr. load chronoing at 3288fps.  The max load in the Alliant reloading pamphlet shows 72gr. at a speed of 3205fps.  No pressure signs arose and accuracy was excellent.

For each load Sierra was fastest followed by Grand Slam and Speer.  For the 71gr. load the results were 3288fps, 3208 and 3179 respectively.

My brother in law was so impressed he switched powders and is using RE 17 for his 300WSM.

Good luck!

Hey I know you said you didn't know from one day to the next how you were going to feel but would you be interested in joining us in Oct/nov for a Pheasant/ Chukar hunt we've been talking about over in the "OT Coffee House" thread?  It would be up north of Carisle

Check it out and think about it!!! Would be nice to meet ya and others.

I've worked with RL17 but only in the 30-06 and 375 Ruger.  I was duly impressed!

There is very little data on RL17 and none with the 375 Ruger so I picked a low load and started up looking for pressure signs, monitoring for pressure signs and watching velocity, so if you use my data do the same.  I worked with 2 bullets the 260 gr Accubond and the 270 TSX

TSX 270 RL17 83.5 3.285 2830
TSX 270 RL17 84.0 3.285 2941

When you allow for the chronograph being 15' in front of the muzzle that means the 86.5 gr load was an honest 3000 fps with a 260 gr Accubond!  Shocked

This is what the primers looked like on the 86.5 gr load

easy bolt lift and the pockets held new primers on the next reload just like they were new.  At that point I stopped going up, not because of pressure but just being a scaredy cat I guess.  Anyway, why would you need more than 3000 fps with a 260 gr Accubond anyway?

There were several decent groups but for all around game pounding and to be safe even in hot weather I decided on this medium load

Now on the 30-06 I got about 100 fps more velocity than with RL22.

Once again, if you use this data start lower in your gun and work up.

#loads/bullet/grain wt/ballistic coeffiecient/OAL/comparator/powder/charge/velocity
Load 4 ACCU 200 0.588 3.365 3.750 RL17 52.5 2615
Load 3 ACCU 200 0.588 3.365 3.750 RL17 53.0 2617
Load 3 ACCU 200 0.588 3.365 3.750 RL17 53.5 2654
Load 3 ACCU 200 0.588 3.365 3.750 RL17 54.0 2649
Load 5 ACCU 200 0.588 3.365 3.750 RL17 54.5 2713
Load 4 ACCU 200 0.588 3.365 3.750 RL17 55.0 2742
Load 4 ACCU 200 0.588 3.365 3.750 RL17 55.5 2758

and still no pressure signs and multiple reloading of cases.  I stopped only because all the velocity I wanted was 2725 fps to fit the Kahles TDS reticle.

Is RL17 the real deal.  You betcha.  It will displace RL22 and RL25 as the premier powder on my shelf.  Lucky for me there is a local dealer who has lots of bottles.

Nope, I'm good.  Reloader

Besides, at 3000 fps I am already matching the 375 Ultra & 378 Wtby according to my manuals.

SmileI have a .375-.338 and have been using H4350, 75gr. with 270 gr. Hornady; 75 gr. with 260 Nosler AB's.

Where I live the great component shortage (hoarding???) is still alive and H4350 at reasonable prices is hard to buy.

I now plan to use Re17 in my .375-.338 - I would have chambered it for a .375 Ruger except that round was not invented then. I fire form my .338Win brass using AA2 pistol powder, cream of rice, & crisco -- it makes the rifle smell funny but does a good cheap job.

Best bang for the buck IMO is the Competition Electronics Pro-Chrono

much better than the Shooting Chrony.  You don't need all the printers, remote readouts etc., just get the plain one.  It is easy to read from the bench.

Price has gone up on the Pro-Chronon though.  When I bought mine it was on sale for $89.00 and now it is regular price of $115.00 at M-I-D-W-A-Y
