While I was at the range last weekend, we got to BS'ing about what the ideal all American gun collection ( within reason ) should have in it . Well, the responses ran one way with the tactical crew, a MD state trooper chimed in with a list a mile long, and some of the older fellers jumped in with firearms popular in their youth. So I thought, what if you would limit it to 6 or 7 ( I know, no fun) , exclude Black powder ( even though it's my favorite way to take game) , and stick just to rifles/handguns--What do you come up with ???Loco

For Me

1) Lever action .. should be a Win 94 variant , but I do like the Marlins . Call it a Fielder 's Choice
2) 45 acp Single Action,,If you had to pick from the zillions out there- go classic-Colt or perhaps Springfield ..gotta defend one's castle
3) 12 gauge pump action and all that it can do . the versatool of shotguns ...make mine a Rem 870...
4) the Venerable Model 70 ..with a good old wood stock and a deep blued barrel in 30/06 --the versatool of rifles
5) My ode to Dirty Harry ,,,44 mag S&W Model 29... --the versatool of handguns ( sound familiar ? )....remember to ask yourself " Did I fire 5 shots or 6 ..you know, in all this excitement I forgot myself ..."
6) Varminter -- I like the idea of an AR ... Today's are very very accurate ..lots of fun...and can be arranged almost at whim to whatever situation you find yourself in ( long range, tactical, caliber selection, etc) ....let's face it , they are an icon of today's firearm enthusiasts and military buffs ( except Jim Zumbo )
7) Surplus something ... 1903 Springfield, garand ,30 carbine , 45 , old 45 colt revolver  , Sharps, .... keep it domestic ...

In reality ..how do I score ..

1)Lever actions -----yup
2) 45 acp-----strike one
3) 12 gauge pump -- yup ( too many )
4) Model 70 ----sorta ,bought my son a 70 compact  ( at least a wood stock and blued barrel )
5) Model 29 44 mag --- yup
6) AR-15 --- varminter set up Rock River and a Colt shorty 7.62x39
7) Surplus - strike two

So now I know what I need to get ...perhaps a Fulton Armory jazzed up Garand and a 45 Colt Gold Cup ... Yeah--that'll make the wife happy.Big%20Grin

What would yours consist of ?

Note== as was pointed out by Silver -- gotta throw in a 22 .. after all - I'd venture to say all of us learned the basics with a 22

Needs a couple of classic .22s like the hammer pump winchester gallery guns and a bolt action single.

Next a side by side, like a good 16 gauge.

A low or high wall Winchester, Ballard or Remington rolling block.

Extra points for a Savage 99

Something scared brought back from some foreign conflict... Lugars get extra points, as do civial war era items.

I want an elephant gun .... 458 magnum +  .... don't have any elephants here in Maryland ... would never kill one .... but all the African safari movies I've watched over the years makes me want one . My 3 1/2 " super magnum 12 guage with rifled slugs is as close as I got so far ...  with the top folding remington police model stock all parkerized makes it the biggest handgun in the world .....  This%20Much !  It draws more attention than any other firearm I have when I have it out and about . I just can't find one of these to carry it for me

I got to fire a 458 at our local range here in Westminster as a guy was prepping before heading to South Africa ...Not as bad as I thought it would be ..Also took a whack at a Krieghoff 470 double ...more like a big push than a punch to the shoulder , but those big cases were cool !
that photo reminds me to clean my camels toes....

so, what should every ( average) gun owning patriotic flag waiving American have ....within reason ....?

Would love to add a H&H Royal Deluxe double rifle in 577NE but my house isn't worth that much on a trade.

...not quite sure this fits the ideal "all American" viewpoint but I could buy it out of the New York gun room if that helps.

I love my .458 Lott in Ruger #1. THAT's an all American gun. I am still torn over staying with open sights or scope, but either way, it's a real "shooter".
