Well it's that time of the year again,
I drug the Beretta out and gave it a cursory inspection before loading up to go. I didn't know if I was going to have to work today or not until yesterday. That's when I found out I could take my son on a dove shoot today. So, here it is opening day morning and I have no place to hunt. Grabbed the newspaper at found a dove shoot not to terribly far from the house 75 bucks a gun at central Alabama Sportsmens Club. (website of same name no spaces) I called and they were not booked solid so we had a spot. Andrew my son took an auto loader and I took my O/U. Most opening day hunts we've been on in the last few years has really ,I think, turned Andy off dove hunting, just were not any birds. We showed up at the Blue Boar lodge about 30 min after the official start time 12 noon. The club members were great folks, offered us lunch, drinks the usual. But some teenage boys about Andys age were already in the field so Andy couldn't stand it that I was standing around shoot the breeze when we should be in the field. So off we go. The best I can discribe this place is a managed Lodge for russian boar I think, sign was everywhere. But this place had birds all over it. The afternooon started off slow, a few would fly in there would be a flurry of shots and it would go quiet again. About 3:30 the birds started coming in 6 to 8 at a time and you had to keep your head on a swivel, they were coming in from everywhere. by 5:30 I had my limit in the bucket and I went to the club house. Bama start playing and was over half way thru the first quarter before I got that boy of mine to come in out of that field. Between Andy and I we shot every round we had. (Did I fail to mention this is the first time I've had a shotgun in my hands this year.) We had a great time, I've spent the last two hours cleaning birds and shotguns. But man was it worth it. Wouldn't miss it for the world. Not even for 50 yard line tickets. Well, If they were Alabama/Auburn or Bama/LSU, Tenn or Georgia, we would have to take the tickets. LOL I plan on E-mailing the club and thanking them for putting on the shoot. Had they not, we probably would not have had as good of time, nor as many birds for tomorrows lunch. LOL Edited: for my lack of attention to detail (spelling & grammar ) Don't want Ed to have to get on me. Edited by Steelbenz - September/07/2008 at 21:08 |

Sounds like fun, Steel. I have not made a dove hunt since moving to Alabama. Intend to every year, but just have not been able to. I love dove stuffed with seeded Jalapeno peppers, onion with a little salt and pepper, and wrapped in bacon, cooked over an open grill for about 15-20 minutes.

It was a Blast, Pun intended!!! I'll give y'all a recap on one particular Dove, We had a number of people in the field with us so I basically boxed off a shoot/no shoot area for myself. As people would call birds coming into the field, unless they flew into that box or had the possibility to fly thru my area of the sky I just didn't waste my time. This particular bird happened to have the misfortune to fly directly at me but stayed to low to take a shot at a distance. When he finally pulled up in my box I shot, I have had birds fall as near as my feet, but I had to catch this one or it would have hit me in the chest. Everybody that witnessed my catch, Son included told me to stop showing off!!!
I laughed an told them "Hey, Even a blind squirrel find a nut now an then." Y'all know the saying, "Some times it's better to be lucky than Good.!!!!" LOL |

Good one SB. Sounds like good fun was had by all. There is a lot of good bird shoots available in SA, but I have never really got my teeth into shooting with a shotgun.

+1 Only way to eat doves for me. My brother and I shot our limit in an hour opening day. Cows were out of the feed lot for once so we sat along a tree line not far from the lot, and they flew in there like crazy. I've never seen such a thing. When we walked in, about 100 doves got up, and kept trying to circle back until we had a limit. By the way, I hope your son had a blast. I am just getting my daughter into hunting, and am having a great time with it.
