My Campbell Hausfeld 3hp Compressor Horizontal tank compressor is on its last legs. The tank has rusted thru 3 times after being patched with JB weld over the last 3 years. It is also hemorrhaging oil into the tank and out around the shaft. It has been fateful since 1984. Even though it still pumps pretty good sad though it is, it is time to retire the old gal. I am wanting to upgrade to something in the 3.5 hp range on a 60 gallon tank.  I would like the Quincy 3.5 but the $800 is well over the Puma 3.2 V6060 at $529. Both have good reviews. If I up to a 5 hp my wiring currently at #10 220 may not be enough and will need to add in the cost to upgrade to #8 wire. I do a lot of sanding on woodworking projects, Been known to paint a few cars and have one and 3 trailers that needs  paint jobs now. Grinding and light welding. Any pros or cons or favorite brands. No China made to be considered.

I purchased a Craftsman about a year ago. I also looked at an Ingersoll Rand, but they were pretty much the same specs, so I figured I would save some money with the Craftsman. Wrong. A buddy of mine did purchase the IR and it blows my Craftsman away. Also I do not know if you do this, but I always open the drain valve after I am done using it.

You wouldn't know what to do with yourself if you did this. Not that I know you, but sounds like you like to keep busy in a little bit of everything.
Give me a shot, I won't disappoint!

DeVilbiss compressors (ChargeAirPro)  have worked well for me, if they are still in business. I haven't needed to buy a compressor in 20 yrs, so don't know what's out there, now.
You are talking about a 2- stage, right?

2 stage compressor start at 5HP...

Devilbiss was bought by B&D as well as Emglo and Sanborn and a third I can't recall right now.

The research I've done seems to indicate that there are a vary limited number of pump designs in the industry.

Oiless ones don't have the capacity your looking for.  If your painting cars and sandblasting things I'd recommend a 2 stage with at least 15CFM @ 90PSI or you will work it to death.  Of 2 stages, there are in-line and V compressors within your finacial reach.  The biggest difference between the compressors is the valving system.  In-line compressors run hotter then V compressors.  The better compressors will have a cooling loop between output of pump and the tank to cool the air.

I went with a 5HP 80 gallon 2 stage Porter Cable (Sanborn) 15CFM @ 90PSI.  I've painted, Sandbalsted, ran multiple Air tools without any issues or having to stop and let compressor rest or recover pressure.  Most residential compressors ar NOT rated for a high duty cycle...in other worsd they are meant to be rested OFTEN or their lifespan really suffers.

I almost forgot!

Which ever compressor you buy make suer it has an ASME certified tank!  A lot of them don't and they can be very dangerous.

Finally pulled the trigger on a compressor. The Quincy 5 hp 2 stage 60 gallon is sitting in the shop. Output is 15.2 cfm @175 PSI. It is quiet too. It sounds more like a whirrr than a pump. Got it powered up and doing a pressure check overnight to see how well it holds.

Pressure test passed. Pumped the tank up to 165 lbs. then shut it off.  This morning it was at 160 lbs.
I expect that was from the cooler temps this morning. It was still 97 deg. last night and this morning it was only 82 deg.

Today the man in brown delivered the Rapidair MaxLine air delivery system for the shop. This is some what new to the market. Looked pricy at first but after pricing black iron pipe, the fittings and the time, equipment, and help needed to install it. This just made since. It should be a breeze to put up by myself.

I've read about that system.  Let me know how it works for you, it looks nice.

I did a hybrid black pipe and hose system.  I put my compressor outside the pole barn in a lean-to shed and pipe the air in thru black pipe to a manifold station inside.  This really cut sown on the noise!  There I had three separate branches each with its' own cutoff.  One with moisture trap and line dryer for spraying paint, one into the woodshop and the last I ran a 1" rubber airline hose up to a hose reel hanging from ceiling and then to the far wall to a multiple connect station.  The hose reel is a 50 footer and reaches 20 feet outside the barn when needed.

At this time I will have 2 runs. One with 3 stations . Run 1 will be a high pressure with a station  at each of the over doors and one on the porch area. These will be where I use the impacts. The 2nd run a lower pressure run will be inside the woodworking area and 1 near the reloading bench. I built a frame that bolts up for a canopy outside for painting. That keeps the mist off all the equipment inside. I am only an occasional fair weather painter.
