A hiker was mauled to death and three others injured by an enraged buffalo bull in the Mountain Zebra National Park near Cradock on Monday, reports Msindisi Fengu.

The incident happened at arund 11.15am when the four hikers stumbled onto the bull minutes after started their walk on the park’s Imbila Hiking Trail.

“The buffalo charged the hikers a number of times,” said SA National Parks Board communications manager Megan Taplin.

She said paramedics were called to the scene at the park, situated 12 kilometres outside Cradock.

One hiker had already died and the three others were taken to hospital for treatment.

Rangers then tracked the bull and killed it.

I read a magazine article years ago where a big game hunter went out hunting small game for the pot with a 22. Stumbled on a ticked off buff, but he managed to get up in a tree. The buff wasn't leaving so he used a 357 Mag with the old 158gr armor piercing rounds. He put the round or rounds between the buff's eyes and dropped him. I wonder how that round would have performed if he hadn't made it to the tree.

Your quiet reserve and understatement are your most endearing qualities.  Some would have recommended an extremely harsh defensive solution.

An old friend of mine was a gunship pilot in Vietnam. He said they would shoot waterbuffalos with flachets. He said they usually would rollover end over end twice then get up and run.
