will soon to have a 18 in. Rock River varmintor Quad rail free float tube.  This gun is a dule purpose rifle that will be used for long rang out to 600 yd. or so and can have a red dot or other type site for CQB drills and the such.  Mostly long rang target using 68 to 77gr. ammo for groups and 55gr. PMC for fun.  Long with 64gr. for varmints and deer.

The problem.

I need glass.  But what kind?

I do not want to go over board on a scope for the gun.  $400 rang is max.  I have Have heard all good things about Super Snipers.  But I love a variable scope.  Afraid 10 power too little some times and 16 or 20 to much for the occational under 100yd. criters.

No Leupold.  Burris I like and less than Leupold and same class.

I like Simmons and thinking about moving my Whitetail Classic 6.5 x 20 that is on my 7mm. to my AR.

and May try a swift but I heard light transmissions to be about 85%.

Nikon Buck Master good but not enough light with 40mm.

I like Weaver and a V24 Mil Dot maybe a way too go.

I would like a scope that I can put a BDC from www.kentonindustries.com and Target Turrents would be a plus and maybe Mil dots.

Gettintg a lower end scope that a BDC will work on may be a way too go tell I find what I want.

I sure wish there was a 6.5 x 20 Super sniper I would buy it in a heart beat and be done.

Please send me lots of advice I shure do need it.    THANKS

Given what you said this fixed 4x IOR is my recomendation. Personally I think you are expecting more than what is realistic for $400. in the way of optics. Most Simmons scopes are marginal quality and not recommended. Other scopes of acceptable quality under $400 that would be good choices for this type of rifle are the 10x Super Sniper and the Leupold Mark 4 PR 3-9x40 or Burris Fulfield II Tactical. Red Dot types that would work are Aimpoint and EOTech but the 1x while great at CQB distances wont be what you need at distance. If you feel a need for higher power than 4x buy some binoculars or a spotting scope the 4x will be sufficient for anything within the range of this rilfe.

By the way, I have the IOR 10X56mm on a Flat top DPMS 20" Southpaw with A2 stock. It is bad out to 300 yards, but that's about my Long's range for 62gr. (picture available).

Addressing you magnification question. I have 24X - 18X - 10X & 6X in many Nikons, IORs and Tasco Super Sniper. To this day I find that the Nikon 18X is the max for 1000 yards. It has a fine cross hair with target dot. This is a fine scope to see 6" bulls  eye at 1000 yards. When it get down to hunting across a 400 yard field, I will take a 10X every-time. My Nikon 2.5-10 56mm Nikon Monarch Gold is the best. But, it $700 new and most guys don't ever sale them. The IOR is as good and maybe better for man size targets out to 1000 yards at 10X like the Super Sniper.

http://www.snipercentral.com/223.htm

,223  really doesnt have much energy after 600 yds. This is a varmit cartridge designed for animals under 20 lbs, doesnt mean it wont kill something bigger but it's sure not the hammer of Thor when it hits.
