I need advice on a scope for a Remington 700 VLS in .308 Win. I will be using it for hunting but also for shooting in a club match that shoots standard silhouette targets at 600 yds. I'd like to keep the cost down in the $800+/- range. I will need pretty good elevation range for the distance and windage range for the 6-10 mph wind that blows across the range. I'm willing to go to a 20 moa base if there is a tradeoff in terms of a better scope with less elevation capability. What is a good variable magnification range for this distance? I've always been an open sight shooter but 600 yds is a long way down range.
I'm looking at the:
Nikon Monarch 6-24x50 or 8-32x50
Bushnell 6500 4.5-30x50
Sightron SIII
Leupold 6.5-20x50 VX-3

the only thing about the scopes you list is that if you have a deer come in real close it may be fun to try and shoot it on 6 6.5 or 8x, 4.5 would work fine though. its hard to have a scope thats good for hunting and good for target shooting in the same package. if it were me i would look at whats more important, hunting or competition and try to sway my scope selection to better suit that use.

Thanks pyro,

The rifle will be used for mostly competition but any hunting will be longer range as well. If I'm in close-in deer country I'll be using the 88 Winchester.

i would buy the 6500 myself, but the monarch and the vx3 are great choices too.

The newer Sightron III scopes are the best Optics made in Japan. The tracking is accurate and the warranty is lifetime. The Sightron is becoming a popular choice among target shooters and hunters for there tracking clear optics and price.

Does your club have a max magnification for Silhouette?  This may sway the decision.

Horsemany,

This is not a true silhouette match. It's a 600 yd BR match that uses standard silhouette targets (so they are really little out there). I do not believe there is a max mag limit but it is a good suggestion to check out.
