I'm hoping to get a few expert opinions on what scope to mount on my first rifle, a Sako 85 in 30/06. Up 'til now my shooting interests have been limited to shotgunning, but my best friend has been after me for years to start big game hunting, and I've finally decided to get started. I've been reading all I can find here and other forums, and I've caught the bug!

I wanted to put together one high quality rifle/scope combination to use for all big game hunting. After handling many bolt-actions, I found that the rifle that seemed to fit me best was the Sako 85 Bavarian. I picked a 30/06 as an all-around caliber.

My hunting here in Ontario will be for north woods whitetails (stand hunting, not drives) and possibly moose, but we'll be joining my friend's family in Kansas for deer this fall, and some day I'd like to hunt elk in the Rockies and caribou in Quebec. In other words, I want to set this rifle up as a true all-arounder. I plan to spend quite a bit of time this year learning to shoot the rifle, but since I'm new to this I don't imagine attempting any shots on game over 250-300 yards for the forseeable future.

Looking for a high quality scope to run on this rifle as I plan on relying on it for the next few decades if all goes well. Absolute upper limit is $1000, but I'd rather keep it under $700 or so. I had more or less decided on a Kahles CL 2-7x36, but then I decided that I want to use the opti-plex mounts, and since the lowest version (the "extra low" one-piece ring mount) still leaves plenty of clearance for a 42mm range objective, I started to think I might as well take advantage of the option of using a slightly bigger lens. Could either go up in power to the 3-9 range scopes (thinking again of the Kahles CL) , or down a bit to one of the 1.5-6x scopes.

The rifles weighs 7#, and I would like to keep the rig somewhat on the lighter side, avoiding scopes that weigh over a pound.

Well, I'd appreciate hearing a few learned opinions on the "ideal" power range and objective size for an all around big-game rifle.

At what ranges will you be shooting (elk can be a long shot)?

I'd look to Kahles, Zeiss Conquest, maybe IOR, maybe Swarovski.

Whatever you mount, I'd put it on with Talley rings, all my Tikkas wear Talleys, great rings!

I'm not sure what opti-plex mounts are like, but your scope options all would work fine.  I've used a 2.5-8 x36  Leupold Vari-X111 for years and never found it wanting for big-game hunting magnification, but occasionally a little in low-light performance. Your choice of Kahles would be a few notches better in that department, so I think you are pretty well covered.
I would lean as low and light as possible, and  would also seriously consider the IOR fixed 4x hunting scope for less than 400 bucks, or something similar. Maybe even a fixed 6x if deep woods hunting wasn't on the agenda...

The Kahles 2-7X36 CL you mentioned would be a fantastic scope for that rifle.  I would lose the Opti-Loks and go with Talleys as well.  The OL mounts are just too high, and they are unnecessarily expensive for what you get.

Besides the Kahles, I would also seriously consider the Zeiss Conquest 3-9X40 & 3.5-10X44, Bushnell Elite 2.5-10X40, Nikon Monarch 2-8X32 & 2.5-10X42, Trijicon Accupoint 3-9X40, and Leupold VX-3 2.5-8X36.  All are within your budget and would leave $ remaining for good mounts.

I wouldn't rule out a fixed power scope either.  I'm partial to the Conquest 4X in this category, mainly because I prefer 4X in a fixed power scope, but the Leupold 6X42 FX-3 and IOR 6X42 30mm would be excellent choices as well.

I also love the kahles Cl 2x7, can't find fault there.  You also have chosen a great rifle in the sako 85 along with a great caliber in the 06'.  As far as i'm concerned you pretty much have it all figured out, good luck and enjoy.

My Sako 75 has been through many ring / scope combos. I agree with Ted... loose the Optilocks and go with the Talley's. Conetrol mounts are very nice looking and you can get very low ones, but they aren't cheap. Scope-wise, the smaller Kahles are very nice. Trijicon Accu-points are super if you love that type of reticle. The Swaro AV 3-10 X 42 in low Talley's would be about perfect. Mine currently wears a Zeiss Conquest 4 X 32 which, for my application, works very well. There are endless possibilities. Good luck.

Guys- thanks for the feedback.

I decided to go with the Kahles CL 2-7x36 and have one on the way.

I have a couple of questions about mounting the scope:

1. The rifle came with open sights. I'm not sure I'll use them a lot, but the model with sights was reduced by $300 compared with the same rifle without sights, so the choice was easy. I'd like to leave the rear sight on the rifle, so I'm wondering if the scope can be mounted with the objective right down on the barrel without the rear sight interfering with the view. The sight height is almost 5/8" above the barrel.

2. If I go with the Talley's, what height should I order? Are the lightweight mounts available for Sakos? I didn't see them listed on the web site.

3. How are the Leupold ringmounts for Sako rifles? They look simple, which attracts me, and they are inexpensive.

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. I will post some pics of the rifle once I mount the scope.

The two Sakos I own both enjoy Zeiss Conquests 3X9X40. Would certainly fit the hunting you describe.

You'll like the Kahles.  I have 2 of that model.  Great all around...

They look like medium height to me.  Do you have a caliper to measure with?  Should be .5 in from bottom of ring to receiver for medium mounts.  I think it is .40 for low mounts
