Anyone have first hand knowledge of minimum power or magnifcation required to see

30-06 bullet holes at 300 yds.  Size or weight is not important as I wll mainly be using it at the local gun range which is limited to 300 yds.  Would like to keep dollar amount under 1000 dollar to include a good tripod.  I must be able to see bullet holes most of the time if not all time for that distance should conditions allow.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

It's not a simple matter of magnification.  It is also a matter of resolution.  Magnification does not equal resolution.  It should be expressed more as resolution times magnifcation produces the desired image.

and target contrast, and back lighting, and side lighting and etc.  308 holes can be seen most of the time at 300 yds in the 15x range with a good scope.

I agree... thanks for the info but maybe I should be more specific.  I want to know if a 15x45x50, or a 20x50x50, or a 20x60x80 for example is enough and if so if you guys could recommend a good brand that goes between 200 thru 800 dollars. For example celestron,bushnell...etc. As usual I am just a recreational shooter and I am limited to a 300 yard range.  If I can go low with the extra cash I can purchase my basic reloading equipment which I intend to sink a lot of $$$$$ into.  Thanks again for your patience and excuse my ignorance.

I don't know of any 15-45x50 spotting scopes.  Nikon makes a 13-30x50, the Nikon ED50.  It retails for a little under $700.

Leupold makes a 15-30x50 Golden Ring spotting scope that  retails for right around $400.  It doesn't have the ED glass of the Nikon but, it is a great little spotter nonetheless.

Assuming we are sticking to comparably high-quality units, a larger scope is obviously going to give better performance/resolution than a small one.  The 20-60x80 Bushnell Elite is big and rather heavy but, it is a great scope that can be had for about $650.  The similar Vortex Skyline can also be had for about the same price.

Pentax's 20-60x65 PF-65 II is also an amazing scope that hits the middle ground between these ultra-small and super-large scopes.  Last I checked, it could be had for something like $750.

I would be surprised if you couldn't meet your stated rifle-range requirements with any of these scopes.
