Besides lens flare from bad angles with the sun.  Does a sun shade help with anything else?  (the scope is for shooting small animals at a distance)

depends on how long they are, at some point they become mirage tubes, and work very well for re-directing mirage caused by barrel heat. the best use is, however, a really good way to protect the lens against blows, and other mishaps.

Not very relevant but they are also decent at blocking a shiny glare on a two-way range!
