I have convinced myself that I need an adjustable objective scope for a 17hmr. Would there be a large parallax error from say 100 yds. to 50 yds., assuming the scope is set to be parallax free at 100 yds? Also, what mag range would be recommended for shooting small critters up to 125 or so yards? The 3x9x40 Conquest seems like a good value play at 399. Most AO scopes of high quality have a higher magnification range, cost more money, and are longer and heavier. I have a CL Kahles 3.5-10 50mm that could use, but fear would be mounted too high and would be out of place on my compact cz american. Would also be interested in the perfect scope suggestion. Thanks

Not 100% on when parallax becomes a problem, but I doubt you'd have a problem at 50 yds.  I think it might be more of a problem at say 10 yds.  I think its a good idea to have an AO with the 17 because shots can be close... like at squirrels.  I have a 3-12X40AO on my Savage 9417 and it doesn't overpower the gun at all,  looks great!  A 50mm might though.  The mag range is totally up to your eyes...what ever it takes to see the target.

What I use on my savage 93-17BTV is a Mueller 8-32x40, target dot, long scope, fairly heavy but has side focus and very clear glass usually set it on 20 power for use at 100 yards have no problem
seeing very small groups, Big Grinpaid $220. Having said that my sport is target shooting may not be your cup of tea hunting.

I'd be checking out the Sightron Big Sky 3-9 X 36 A.O. It's a dandy. I had one on my tiny T-Bolt, but it did seem to overpower the little lightweight rifle. Had it been a larger version, I would have kept it.

I think you would be happy with the Conquest 3-9 for a hunting scope.

bonefisher:

I was in a similar dilemna a month ago.

First off, I like nice glass and I cannot lie.  My normal go-to is Zeiss Conquest but last year bought a Swarovski 1.7-10 Z6 for my new .308 x-bolt medallion and LOVE it... but never thought I needed an AO scope.

HOWEVER, I was in a time pinch and wanting to go on a hunt with my son and his new Savage 17HMR. First I transplanted my favorite rimfire scope off my Marlin 39A -  the Nikon 4x fixed (it is a fantastic rimfire scope) but  IMHO not nearly enough scope for the HMR 17 varmint hunting.

I went by my local Bass Pro and bought the unthinkable - BSA. http://swfa.com/BSA-6-18x40-Sweet-17-Riflescope-P13053.aspx

SWFA has a better deal but I was in a hurry and I planned on returning it.  After about 200 rounds through the rifle with the BSA attached from 25 yards to 300 yards, the damn thing is dead on.  I have not used it except in decent light - so I can't comment on the the ability to shoot past sunset.

The AO is adjustable on the turret and makes a huge difference given that we plunk at 25 yards sometimes and it is in focus and sharp just like it is at 18 power and 200 yards.  Also the elevation turret with yardage for the 17 grain rounds is very very accurate.

I have been surprised by this scope.  It might my current favorite rifle/scope combo.  But is does carry a bit of a "fat girlfriend" complex - like the Toby Keith song Running Block and his line to his buddy "We can laugh about her tomorrow, but don't ever tell a soul!"  That may be the best reason to NOT put it on the gorgeous CZ American.

Good Luck.
